I visited La Palmera in June last year as a last minute getaway. We booked through icelolly whom I would advise anyone who doesnt like to be ripped off not to book with this company - we were told a price of around £270 for one week, the final price they charged us without saying so was nearing the £400 mark.
The rooms are all modern, nicely decorated and a decent size. However, the bathroom had large broken ceiling slats that were so bad we could see the pipework etc through the ceiling. The airconditioning didnt seem to work, it was always set at 'freezing', no matter what temperature you set it at. Having a cold room during the day is fine, but at night it was so cold I could barely sleep, which is not the experience you would expect from a climate reaching the hight 20's/30's.
Lastly the balcony. This was barely a balcony at all, the most you could do was stand, you couldnt even fit a small chair on the balcony, it was that small. The hotel across the roas is also so close, people can see right into your room and there were a few rowdy lads shouting crude remarks at any girls they seen on a balcony.
The hotel is fine, decor is fine, reception is a problem though. The staff could only speak Spanish and German so everytime we enquired about anything or tried to bring the broken ceiling tiles to attention, we were met with a puzzled look and sometimes they wouldnt even acknowledge you were there and just ignore you completely.
We did not use the swimming pool, it was quite small and totally overcrowded everyday, no matter what time you were there.
The restaurant is possibly the worst I have ever been to. It was a horrible experience everytime we went into it. On quite a few nights, my partner and I would wait in the queue outside the door as instructed, but the first time, I made the very unfortunate mistake of looking round the door to see into the restaurant, whilst still standing in the queue. I certainly learnt my lesson - the restaurant manager proceeded to scream and shout at me, told me to get out and that I wouldnt be tolerated in his restaurant. I was in utter shock and embarrassment! Every night from then on, the same manager would continue to tell us to get out or he would give us steely looks as we got our food.
The food, itself was barely edible. The selection was extremely poor - i mean, what exactly do you call spaghetti with watery gravy on top? not exactly a main meal...
We decided to eat out a few nights because the food was so terrible but be warned because it is EXTREMELY expensive, even for a sandwich in the town itself.
*The surrounding area
The town is quite compact and not for the faint hearted. The place turned out to be a really shoddy and cheap version of Ibiza, with rowdy clubbers, the place is full of them. The main stretch near the beach is nightclub after nightclub with "hardcore til I die" clubs everywhere. Its not a place Id want to be, we were offered drugs and asked if we had any a few times while walking through the town in the evening.
There are souvenir shops EVERYWHERE and everything is extortionate prices and they will hound you until you go in their shop and if you choose not to buy anything, they will be quite rude. My partner said no to a towel one shopkeeper tried to flog him and got called "an idiot".
The beach is decent, sand is quite rough though, its more stones than actual sand. there are plenty of excursions, we went on a boat trip to another part of the coast, which was well worth the £60 it cost us because I couldnt wait to get away from lloret de mar itself.
Worth of caution, the transfers from the airport, including taxis and buses cannot get you to the hotel. They drop you off quite a bit away from the hotel and dont tell you where the hotel is, you just have to search and hope you stumble across it, which trust me, is no easy task when you have to drag heavy suitcases up cobbled hills in really hot weather!
