From St. Louis to a Quick Trip to NC to visit my daughter at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville ended up at Topsail Island. June 20 to June 24, 2008. What a great trip. I wished I would have read these reviews before I went. They are everything they say and then some. I wished I had a digital camera to share our pictures. They are still not as beautiful as it really is. Peaceful and not crowded. Anywhere on the island is an easy on to the beach even if you aren't on the beach. Our spot was in a townhouse around the 13 mile marker. We weren't on the beach but it was nice to not have all the sand walked into the house. We rented through VRBO. I don't enjoy loud party spots. This is a great family spot without all the tourist traps and uncrowded beaches. There are things to do in Surf City if you want to do some of that and some Shops that are fun, stocked with needed items like beach chairs, towels, t-shirts, sunscreen, etc.... There is an IGA on the Island and a big Food Lion in Sneeds Ferry and Surf City just right off the island for both. We ate at New York Deli and enjoyed it along with their clean restrooms. Mainly did home cooking for my daughter before her departure to Iraq. Also drove to Wilmington for a day. Visited the aquarium near Fort Fisher, North Carolina Beach, a Zoo on the way, and USS NC Battleshipm all really cool things to do. Those beaches were full of traffic and congested, and made us appreciate where we were staying. Wished we could have stayed a week. The Island is full of rentable homes, townhouses and condos. We are planning on driving next time to take a few needed items when my daughter gets back from Iraq in 2010.
