Very good option for staying in Winston-Salem, close to Old Salem and Downtown, and a short distance from exit 5C on I-40BR. Quiet, tree-laden street. Very good restaurant next door. Unexpectedly large room. The front desk made an error in our stay (we booked for two nights, but told next morning we had only one night; problem was fixed, but not without some delay and some attitude). The hotel has free wi-fi, but speeds are rather slow. Conventional and small TV (cable, not satellite). I would stay here if I returned to the city, especially as the hotel has more charm than the conventional chains that dominate the local lodging landscape.

I was in Winston-Salem on business and was told this was one of the best places to stay. This lodging really is an inn...no elevators, no room service, very small workout room, etc. However, I was pleasantly surprised by my room and how comfortable it was. The room was also very clean, which I am picky about. I did eat breakfast in the morning; it's a self-service breakfast (you cook your own waffles, etc.) This is a nice place for a low key traveler or someone who isn't high-maintenance.

Brookstown Inn

22 Apr 2008

we made reservations on march 9th for april 19th--check in time 3:00p.m.--we arrived early in hopes we could check in--we were told our room wasn't ready---they were short on help !!--o.k.--we knew what time check in was, so we went shopping and sight seeing, ate lunch, more sight seeing. about 3:30 p.m. we arrived at the hotel and were told our room wasn't ready !! so we decided to sit and wait and watched other people checking in. a large group of ladies checked in, a few couples, and at 4:00 pm our room, (2 queen beds) nothing out of the ordinary wasn't ready. at 4:30 p.m. my patience had run out. i went to the desk clerk and told him we were leaving, cancel our room !!!--HE SAID "ARE YOUR SURE"?--i didn't reply--we loaded up and headed home--from now on if it doesn't say HAMPTON , HOLIDAY OR SOME OTHER NAME BRAND --FORGET IT!!!!

“awoken by noise, staff inefficient & unapologetic”

Brookstown Inn

8 Apr 2008

We arrived after 10pm, midpoint in our trip with our only "sleep-in" morning the next day. There is no ramp to wheel in suitcases (or for a disabled individual), only a half-flight of stairs to negotiate with heavy bags. There was no covered portico at the front entrance to unload luggage without getting soaked in the rain. No bell service was available. We were given a room in a wing accessed only via an open courtyard - again we were rained on. EARLY the next morning we were awakened by the stomping of people traveling back and forth across the room upstairs. The noise was so loud it could be readily appreciated by the hotel staff over the telephone when I called to inquire about the ruckus. They claimed the noise was from the office staff upstairs where the floors of this quaint old cotton mill were non-carpeted. The hotel staff acted as if this was the first time anyone had ever complained of the noise. We were offered to change rooms for our second night's stay. However, since the noise wouldn't be an issue the next morning when we had to be on the road very early, I chose not to take time to pack up and move and settle into another room. I was not extended the courtesy of being able to speak to the manager, Joey. The assistant manager, Amanda, did speak with him and he authorized a $30 refund for the room for the one night. Even that became a big hassle since I had pre-paid through the Internet. After 30 minutes of waiting while Amanda tried to process the refund (Joey did come to help her but did ignored me) I left and asked that the paperwork just be ready by the time I checked out. The next morning there was no refund slip for me, the night clerk tried to find something for over 20 minutes, then called Joey at home. Still nothing, he only told her that it had been done the previous day . . . they wanted me to wait to leave until 8 am when the other managerial staff arrived . . . . . in the meantime another staff member did acknowledge that usually guests were already up and going by 8am and so the noise wasn't an issue. Never once was an apology offered by the staff about the noise or any acknowledgment that they had caused any inconvenience for me.
During all this, a guest confined to a wheelchair waited in the lobby while her family went to fetch breakfast for her as she was unable to access the dining room herself to join them because there was no ramp or elevator to that level of the hotel.

“Pretty, interesting buildings, but poor mattess on the bed.”

The Brookstown Inn is esthetically pleasing, and we liked the bedtime milk and cookies. The mattress on our bed creaked, and when my husband got in bed I had to fight the slope that was created by his weight. Better mattresses don't create a slope from one side of the bed to the other. The mattress also resulted in aching hips when we woke up.
Our daughter had to sleep on a fold out couch that was equally uncomfortable.
Be warned that travelers must carry their own luggage up and down flights of stairs. We drug bags across a courtyard and down two flights of stairs to our rooms, then up the stairs when leaving. No help was offered from the hotel.
The restaurant The Cotton Mill is within the hotel, and it provides a good dinner.
