Delta Sun Peaks is my first choice of stopover between Whistler and Jasper in the summertime, having stayed here three times now. I have stopped at Kamloops in the past, and there simply isn't any nice lodging or surroundings there. (Not sure why Kamloops has never figured out what a brand new four-star hotel would do for them - there certainly are plenty of people who would benefit.)
With the poor hotels in Kamloops, the drive in to Sun Peaks is completely worth it even for a one-night stopover like we did. The rooms are comfortable, the atmosphere is relaxing, and the service is friendly and fun.
I define Sun Peaks as a "Whistler wanna-be." It will never be what Whistler is, but they sure do imagine themselves that way. Unfortunately in the summertime, there is simply nothing to do in the evenings here. In Whistler there are stores open and evening recreational opportunities; but not at Sun Peaks. For a place to stop, take a walk, have dinner, and perhaps relax in the pool, that's what a one-night summer stop at Delta Sun Peaks provides. In winter, however, it is at the base of the ski run, so it would be a great ski-in, ski-out location without the long walk you might encounter at other ski resorts.
It's a fairly long drive (about 30 minutes) off the highway on a two-lane road, but the bonus is that sometimes I've seen wildlife on this road. Until Kamloops builds a decent hotel, I'll be stopping at Sun Peaks whenever I travel up to Jasper.
