My wife and I spent 10 days in southern Florida and the Keys, and this was one of the best lodging experiences of our vacation. The inn has a private resort feel at a value hotel price. It has a beautiful private waterfront with several (total) kayaks, canoes, and a paddleboat free for guests to use. Overall, I was very impressed by the privacy and level of service for the price.
We stayed in a new guesthouse that the ownership had just acquired. It was separated a ways from the main inn building, and only had a few large rooms -- very private! I would recommend choosing this building if you decide to stay. The waterfront is just a hundred feet or so from the rooms -- not too far and not too close. The room was very nice for the price we paid, with a king-size bed and plenty of space. The room did not have an alarm clock, but the proprietors gave us one quickly upon request. Wireless Internet did not work in the room, but worked fine outside.
The owners were very friendly. I definitely prefer the personal service of a smaller inn such as this to the hit-or-miss service at larger chain hotels. There is a nice outdoor pool, which is good considering that the waterfront, while beautiful, is not fit for swimming. There are several hammocks and beach chairs for relaxing, either right on the shore or under the trees next to the pool. The pool is smaller than at most hotels, but with only a dozen or so total rooms at the inn, there are also fewer patrons vying for its use. We had the pool all to ourselves for the hour during which we used it.
Yes, it is close to the highway (as another reviewer complained), but it's virtually impossible to get away from the highway in this part of the Keys! The islands are on average just a couple hundred feet wide, so it would be unrealistic to expect to be isolated from the highway. We had a room on the beach side of our building, and I could not hear any traffic noise. If you want to get away from the highway, the only choices are private resorts on islands separated from the main Keys, and those will cost you 5-10 times as much. For the price, the White Sands Inn provides an amazing level of service and quality.
The only complaint I had was that no continental breakfast is provided. For a location as isolated as this, it is difficult to have to travel several miles to the nearest restaurant just for breakfast (as far as 10 miles if you want something cheap). The proprietors need to consider adding a continental breakfast. I would be willing to pay an extra $10 just for the convenience.
Overall, we enjoyed a very pleasant stay at the White Sands Inn, and I give it a high recommendation. If half stars were allowed, I would give it 4 1/2 stars. The only reason I do not give it a perfect score is the lack of a breakfast.
I would definitely stay here again if in the area!
