“Very Unloved Hotel”

Rose and Crown Hotel

18 Apr 2008

This was a company event run at the Hotel and I must say, it did look good when I first booked in. The walk in from the old market place to the lounge area was quite welcoming. The reception staff were pretty good as well. This is where it stops. I must make a point of drawing a big thick line between the staff and the premises. What I mean by that is, please do not take what I say as anything against the staff. They were very nice.
When I got to my room I was greeted with a fan heater blowing and the windows wide open. I knew straight away. There was a problem of some kind. The room was very smelly. It smelled of what I can only think of as cats pee. It wasn't, I'm sure. I think it was just damp. The poor bedroom was so old and uninviting. There was even a sign in there with 'Best Western' on it. Goodness knows how long ago they ran the hotel. The bed was so hard and horrible. The sheets were very clean though. The bathroom was ok, but I didn't like the avokado suite. As for my friends rooms. Exactly the same. Very damp and smelly. We can move on to the dining area now. Dinner was (Wait for it) Shepherds Pie. Ok, this might have been arranged for the corporate dinner to keep costs down so I will be careful. It actually didn't taste too bad at all. Breakfast was really very nice. Fresh Fruit, Tea/coffee, Full english breakfast cooked very well.
Lets' go to the bars. There is a bar at the rear which is like a pub really. It gets busy from 2 pm onwards with East European people getting loud and drunk. This are is like this in early evening as well. The main small bar by reception gets contractors in drinking until late in the night. (Lots of building work going on in Wisbech).
I must conclude now. This Hotel is so unloved. It is a beautiful building with wallpaper gradually falling off, with white paint yellowing, cracks on walls.....so on and so on. I just hope that one day someone will spend the money on this lovely building and revamp it. As for Wisbech. Won't get me back there again.
This Hotel will go down well with good hard working people who will pay the rate the Hotel deserves.

“Friendly staff let down by scabby appearance.”

My experience does not seem quite as bad as some of the other reviewers although I would not go back.

Dated at best and scabby at worst. A shower over the corner bath was low pressure and scalding to freezing. Mould around the bath seal. Cigarette burn on the bed cover. An overall stuffy smell in the rooms and corridors. In desparate need of updating and redecorating.

On the brighter side staff were very friendly and a good breakfast (despite the 15 minute wait with only 3 other people in the dining room.)

Limited tight parking in yard next to bar open to public and quite distant from the main hotel.

“Noisy & beds are too bouncy”

We arrived to find that they were having a town-wide disco evening. It was so loud all night - even when they turned off the disco because loud drunken patrons poured out of the streets, into the square and hung about all night. And we were on the 4th floor. The bed was so bouncy that it was impossible to sleep when my husband moved at all. The next day I asked to be moved to a different room with separate beds. The manager was very kind and helpful. We were sent to the more modern part of the hotel and it was infinitely better, but nothing to write home about.

“Never again”

Rose and Crown Hotel

8 Aug 2007

Well, where do I start. I could go on for hours, but here goes.
The first room we were given smelled like a stale ashtray, not a great start especially if you are a non-smoker. Needless to say we asked for another room immediately, and the 2nd room seemed just about acceptable so we agreed to stay the night. On closer inspection there were lots of spiders, cobwebs and flies, but we cleared these oursevles. I am not quite sure what the cleaner had been doing, but it certainly wasn't the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in. I have never seen so many flies, they were all over the hotel. I didn't dare think what might have been sat on my food before I ate it.
We were trying to make the best of the weekend but we soon realised there was a disco and BBQ that evening which was going on until 1pm for anyone who wanted to come. By anyone I mean all walks of life, some of which you would not wish to socialise with. We went out for the evening and on our return at about 11.30pm we realised that our room was next door to a private apartment, who were also playing loud music until very late. Once everything quietened down well after 2pm and we calmed down we were able to get a few hours sleep. Had we not had a prior engagement the next day we would have checked out at 1pm and driven all the way back to the south coast. We were due to stay at the hotel for another night, but we managed to move to a very nice P. Travel Inn 20 miles away and promptly cancelled the 2nd night. We were not made aware of the disco when we booked or even before or when we arrived and when I asked the receptionist why we hadn't been told, she said the BBQ and disco were booked at short notice due to the nice weather. The hotel were not really interested in our comments, and I personally feel they are more interested in the non-residents using the bar and separate pub in the courtyard than their paying residents. They did however agree not to charge for the 2nd night. (I should think so too, I wasn't that happy about paying for the previous night, let alone a night I wasn't staying there) I am not sure what to say about the breakfast apart from it was pretty inedible.
In short, would I ever stay there again? Not a chance, even if it was free!
