This was a company event run at the Hotel and I must say, it did look good when I first booked in. The walk in from the old market place to the lounge area was quite welcoming. The reception staff were pretty good as well. This is where it stops. I must make a point of drawing a big thick line between the staff and the premises. What I mean by that is, please do not take what I say as anything against the staff. They were very nice.
When I got to my room I was greeted with a fan heater blowing and the windows wide open. I knew straight away. There was a problem of some kind. The room was very smelly. It smelled of what I can only think of as cats pee. It wasn't, I'm sure. I think it was just damp. The poor bedroom was so old and uninviting. There was even a sign in there with 'Best Western' on it. Goodness knows how long ago they ran the hotel. The bed was so hard and horrible. The sheets were very clean though. The bathroom was ok, but I didn't like the avokado suite. As for my friends rooms. Exactly the same. Very damp and smelly. We can move on to the dining area now. Dinner was (Wait for it) Shepherds Pie. Ok, this might have been arranged for the corporate dinner to keep costs down so I will be careful. It actually didn't taste too bad at all. Breakfast was really very nice. Fresh Fruit, Tea/coffee, Full english breakfast cooked very well.
Lets' go to the bars. There is a bar at the rear which is like a pub really. It gets busy from 2 pm onwards with East European people getting loud and drunk. This are is like this in early evening as well. The main small bar by reception gets contractors in drinking until late in the night. (Lots of building work going on in Wisbech).
I must conclude now. This Hotel is so unloved. It is a beautiful building with wallpaper gradually falling off, with white paint yellowing, cracks on walls.....so on and so on. I just hope that one day someone will spend the money on this lovely building and revamp it. As for Wisbech. Won't get me back there again.
This Hotel will go down well with good hard working people who will pay the rate the Hotel deserves.
