We went to walk and cycle, and the time we were there did include and major thunderstorm/ flash flood, so you would think this might have dampened our enjoyment. In fact, we thought Alston was brilliant, and the apartment was lovely. A sympathetically renovated building with appropriate knobbly bits in the plasterwork to remind you this was not a new build, skylights to flood the place with light when the sun came out. The balcony at the back overlooked a pretty churchyard, and we had nightly sights of sundry birds at the bird feeders, and a hedgehog. Main bedroom was excellent, and we were able to accomodate weekend guests in a small downstairs bedroom with twin beds ideal for kids, plus a fold out settee in the main lounge upstairs - all at no extra cost, we just let the owners know and they kindly provided us with extra bedding. Co-op couple of minutes away, good deli, couple of decent pubs, excellent community. Film club at the Town Hall with free glass of wine and nibbles was a highlight, if you happen to drop lucky. When we did get out, good walking trails in all directions for intermediate walkers.
