I stayed at Sails on Horseshoe, at the north of Magnetic Island, with my family (children aged 4 & 6) for 5 nights during December 2007, just before most states started school holidays. We had a lovely, relaxing time in lovely tropical weather.
First, a few words on Magnetic Island itself...
MAGNETIC ISLAND
The Island is amazingly large (take a look in Google Earth!), but most of it is National Park. Only the Eastern side of the Island is populated, with most people in the Southeast around the ferry landing area. There is an excellent bus service that services the Island every 45 minutes or so.
The Island is accessed via ferry from Townsville, with Sunferries providing a passenger service and Fantasea (Cruising Magnetic) offering a car ferry. The ferries are a $20 taxi trip from Townsville airport.
There is a range of accommodation on the Island, ranging from backpackers to luxury apartments. There are both official holiday apartment blocks (like Sails) and also numerous private residences offered for holiday rentals.
There is a large IGA supermarket at Nelly Bay (where the ferry arrives) and several smaller Foodworks stores around the Island. Be prepared to pay a bit more for food compared to the mainland due to the extra transportation costs. It may be worthwhile shopping in Townsville if you're coming across by car.
Island activities are mostly swimming (but only in the two netted bbeaches during Stinger season), guided tours (frankly not much better than just taking the bus around yourself) plus some powered water sports such as jet skis, boats and the famous Red Baron bi-seaplane.
The ocean was beautifully warm during our stay. We often went inn first thing in the morning, and even swam during sunset. The water was apparently around 26 degrees, but felt even warmer.
SAILS ON HORSESHOE
Sails on Horseshoe is located right on Horseshoe Bay, which is probably the nicest beach on Magnetic Island. Sails is across the road from a chldren's climbing playground and a couple of minutes from the all-important Swimming Net, which lets you swim in the ocean during Stinger Season (approx Nov-May).
Most units in the complex are 2-storey, 2-bedroom but there are a couple of 1-bedroom units. We stayed in Unit #3, which is the only 1-storey ground-floor 2-bedroom unit. It was a great size for the family, with 2 bedrooms and a garden courtyard overlooking the Bay where we ate all our meals.
There were very few guests during our stay (just before the December school holidays), so we rarely saw other people. (In fact, if it wasn't for backpackers, the whole Island would have been practically deserted!) Our children enjoyed the pool which had a spa step. The pool didn't seem to be heated but was a good temperature at this time of year.
A word of caution... Some units back directly onto the pool, which might be a bit noisy during the busy season. Try to get a unit away from the pool, preferably overlooking Horseshoe Bay. All units are individually owned, so the furnishings and interior quality may vary. Try asking for a recently renovated unit.
New managed took over earlier this year (around June?). They were very helpful, but did not have extensive knowledge of the Island (eg bushwalking tracks). They also recommended that we do the Tropicana stretch-jeep tour, but we found it didn't add much compared to our previous trip around the Island on the bus service.
We enjoyed our time at Sails on Horseshoe immensely and would happily recommend a stay there. We'd definitely recommend staying at Horseshoe Bay -- there are a few other accommodation locations in the beach area.
