“Not what I had hoped for”

After reading a previous traveler's posting, I'm wondering if we weren't in the same room. I used Marriott points to book this weekend stay - I wish I would have saved them for somewhere else. We were also on the 2nd floor right next to the elevator - so we heard it running all day and night from the bedroom. For some reason we also ended up in an handicapped accessible room. There are several bars in the shower which get in the way when you don't need them. The most irritating aspect of our stay was the constant noise from above and beside us. It seemed you could hear anything going on anywhere in the hotel!

The location is decent, you have pretty good access to a lot of Columbus. The bed was ok - nothing special. The living room furniture seemed like a college dormatory.

It was certainly nothing special.

“Disappointed”

TownePlace Suites Columbus Worthington

5 Apr 2007

My friend and I went down to Columbus, OH for a quick getaway and some great shopping. My husband used his Marriott points for the room
for 2 nights. Our room was on the 2nd floor near the elevator. The room was equipped for a handicapped person, which we are not. There were numerous bars all around the tub, a seat hooked onto the back of the tub, which made it very inconvenient and awkward for us. The sink was extremely small and the cord of the hairdryer laid in the sink (very poor design). The real problems started later in the evening. When we tried to latch the extra security lock, it didn't work. I called down to the office for maintainence around 10 p.m., but the clerk said he was the only one there, all other workers had gone home. He couldn't move us to a different room...they were booked solid. He said he would have someone check it out in the morning. Therefore, we didn't feel safe and shoved the big sofa chair
in front of the door. As we laid in bed, we were constantly bothered by the buzzing and rumbling of the elevator. We realized it was right
behind our closet door (another poor design). We went shopping the next day and when we returned the lock still wasn't fixed. In fact, the following morning when were getting ready to check out, the maintainence finally showed up. I also had to go to the office that morning, because the invoice placed under our door had charged me for
the room instead of deducting Marriott points.

Other disappointment: in the exercise room, there was only 1 bike, 1 treadmill and 1 stepper...pathetic for a Marriott this big.

This was the first time I have stayed at the Marriott Townplace and I won't be back. I'll be back at the Sheraton Suites just down the road.

“The bed made the stay...”

We stayed in a Suite with a queen sized bed and a sofa bed. We found the furnishings to be clean and almost new. The queen bed (memory foam?) and linens were wonderful. My wife was impressed with the “white” comforter that was still “white”. The sofa bed was in good condition but it was still a sofa bed. It was good enough for the kids but I’ll stick with the other one! There was one TV that had a rather large assortment of cable channels to choose from. The room had a small kitchen complete with a full size (small) refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, sink, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishes, and utensils. The bathroom was normal size with a combination tub and shower that included a rounded shower curtain rod and adjustable shower head.

I found the person at the front desk to be friendly and helpful. We called room service after check-in to request more pillows for the children. We left our room before they had a chance to deliver them. When we came back the pillows were waiting for us.

The hotel appears to be rather new. I did notice that several of the light switch covers appeared to have be put on rather haphazardly. They were often off center and noticeably un-level. The metal ring that attached the shower head to the wall was loose and had fallen down around the shower head. Overall, the room was clean but I did notice a small stain near the base of toilet and what appeared to be a few cigarette ashes that had fallen onto the air conditioner by the window. I would imagine that someone was trying to “sneak” a smoke in this non-smoking room. We didn’t notice any smoke odor when we arrived. The hotel must be near a railroad. We heard a train go by while we were outside and it was noticeable. We only heard one other train during our stay and it was while we were in our room. If you didn’t know what it was, you’d think that it was just a semi-truck driving by.

The hotel has a free continental style “grab and go” breakfast. You can go to the lobby and pick up the usual (milk, juice, fruit, cereal, muffins, etc.) and bring them back to your room or eat them on the run. Great way to save a little money…

The hotel is located near several major highways in Columbus. You should be able to reach most of the attractions with less than a 20 minute drive. There are also several nice restaurants to choose from in the area.

Overall, we were pretty happy with our stay and are planning on coming back again. We paid $76.00 with the AAA rate. There are cheaper hotels in the area but not with a bed and kitchen like this. If you’re on a budget and have children I would highly recommend staying here. It’s not the Ritz, but it’s new, clean, safe, and pretty reasonable. Have Fun!
