This hotel is situated in one of the few ( the only ??) place in Maharashtra, India , that does not allow any vehicular traffic at all - access is by horse-back or human-powered rickshaw.

This has prevented trees from being felled to make way for roads -- which is the charm of this tiny Hill-station.

Lords Central Hotel is situated in the heart of the small and quaint bazaar, and keeps up all the traditions of the old days -- though I was sorry to see that the five-course meals, served by waiters in full livery and plumed turbans, has given way to a more conventional buffet. The food , however, was excellent and plentiful ( but no desserts ???)

The rooms were small and cosy -- somewhat old-fashioned, but then, thats the charm of the place. The toilets were clean and up-to-date, which is what mattered to us.

The owners are very charming and friendly, and go out of their way to make you feel at home.

A very pleasant place to spend a week-end -- or longer, if you enjoy long walks under the trees, and horse-riding !

  • Liked — The feel of being back in the days of the Raj !
  • Disliked — It was very difficult to call home -- my mobile just would not connect !! ( Though regular phone calls can be made quite easliy )

The hotel itself was charming, the family that runs this hotel ensures that you get a very homely feeling. The best thing about this hotel however was the food, it was fantastic....let me say that again....the food here is fantastic. The location and views from the hotel are not too bad either. The only problem I had with this hotel was that the rooms were quite shabby and could do with some sprucing up although we probably did not end up with good rooms (the hotel was fully booked).

We had very mixed feelings about this hotel. The owners are charming, the food and service are good and the position and views outstanding. There's also a very good pool.

The downside is that the rooms are rather shabby and far too expensive. We saw far better facilities and value in Matheran but maybe they wouldn't have the atmosphere of Lord's.

  • Liked — views, atmosphere
  • Disliked — tatty rooms, over priced

The place looked run down and need of a renovation when we first walked in there looking for rooms.
We checked out some of other "good" new hotels in Matheran, such as Brightland Resort,Horseland Resort etc.
We then returned to the Lords as all these other hotels were filled with tourist groups with kids. The last thing you would want in Matheran would be a resort full of people and 20 drunk men in the pool.
We took the Valley View rooms which had a splendid view .The food which was included in the room was again excellent.
The person who was running the place (I dont remember the name) was the best host you can expect in a hotel.
Will definately come back to this place.

There is something magical about Lord's. You don't realise straight away but it creeps up on you. Don't expect plushness or luxury in the material sense. But there is a luxury in the character , the timelessness and the tranquility here - the wonderful warmth of the hosts, the Lord family who have been running the place for generations, the monkeys on the roof, the verandah with it's dusty books and magazines and a cool Kingfisher beer, the watchful lizard on the wall, the badminton court, the view of the valley, the homely dining room with all meals included.. I fell in love with the place. Matheran is a beautiful place and Lord's is ideally situated and is the perfect home while you are there. Highly recommended.
