“Lovely Old English Hotel”

Gissing Hall Hotel

This is a lovely hotel. Very English in character.

We had booked a standard room, but they contacted us twice to let us know they had a Prom' that night and had transferred us to their best room - number 21 - so that we were not disturbed by any noise. In fact the students were all about 16, very well behaved and we didn't hear a thing. We enjoyed watching them arrive in their finery, competing in the uniqueness of ther transport - the rickshaw won!

The room was lovely, very large with a huge four poster bed and a smart modern bathroom. The whole hotel has a very appealing lived and used feel. It's a fantastic escape from the corporate chain type hotel, very relaxed and with pretty gardens.

Breakfast is freshly cooked to order and plenty of it and dinner was excellent, tasty and well presented.

A previous guest commented on a dead bluebottle in the window - Our room was very clean and yes, there was a small dead fly on a window sill in one of the public areas - so what? It's a house in the countryside - you open the windows and things fly in and die. We loved it and are really looking forward to going back.

We came for a post-Christmas relax, and were rewarded beyond our expectations by a unique hotel offering individual charm, genuine desire to help from the staff and gorgeous surroundings in lovely english countryside. If you want to get away from it all and relax this is the place to do it.
It's a gorgeous old building with real history, each room is different and is full of charm- the complete opposite of your standard chain hotel experience. We had dinner there and the food was excellent and local. We were almost put off by some of the negative reviews found on this site from other visitors, and all i can say is "ignore them". You should pick your room carefully as they are all quite different, but if you go for one of the larger rooms (suites really) you won't be dissapointed. We stayed in room 21 and were blown away by the size, decor, view and charm of the space.

“Almost good...”

Gissing Hall Hotel

26 Jul 2007

For the price the rooms were good. Despite a little damp on the wall (not unexpected in a house of it's age) the room had lots of character although a little spooky (again, not unexpected). Decent shower/bathroom, TV and tea/coffee making facilites. The bar and restaurant however appear very odd as they are not at all inkeeping with the rest of the building. The hotel was also reasonably busy and understaffed meaning staff had to run between the reception, bar and restaurant permanently. They were reasonably cheerful though. Restaurant meals were quite good if not a little expensive although a cheaper 'bar meal' type menu was available. Only complaint here is being made to feel uncomfortable for sitting in the bar after dinner. As we were the only ones there (despite buying drinks) we were made to feel as though we were keeping people up (at 10 o'clock). Lights were switched off etc. Since this place is so isolated there is no other choice for alternative drinks elsewhere. Other problem which really should be looked at is the cleanliness of the crockery, glasses and cutlery. I had a dirty (with dried tea in) cup at breakfast despite being first up. A little dusting in the dining room would also be a bonus.
Overall not bad but could so easily be a lot better.

This is a tale of 2 halves. The staff and the service they gave was excellant. Always helpful, made the meals enjoyable and showed interest in where we'd been and how our day was.

The down side....The rooms have 'characture'. This is an old house and there are creaking stairs and funny shaped rooms. But the sink taps could have been tightened to the sink, and the wall sockets could have been tighter to the wall. The funiture was showing its age, but the bed was comfortable, and the linen/towels were clean.

We had a fire alarm at 5 in the morning (false alarm that happens 4 times a year, or so he said). Upon reaching the main door (which we unlocked with our key as there was no bar to push) it was raining, so we waited for the other guests and staff before herding towards the muster point. 15 minutes later there were 6 guests and NO STAFF. It took my wife calling the number on the reception desk to wake someone in the house next to us and to come across and investigate. There are no overnight staff on site when we stayed.

Finding the place. Take your Sat-Nav and someone that can read a map. Very badly sign posted from the main road, and at the entrance

Stayed in the wedding suite for 1 night in February 2007. The room we stayed in was not the one pictured on the website and was the only suite so goodness knows where they got the picture from. The jacuzzi emitted black slime even after the 3rd time of getting it going. The remote control on the tv didn't work and was not able to be replaced. The hot tap came off in my hand! The lounge was being used for a wedding party so all there was to do was eat and go back to the room. All in all a very horrible experience, how someone would feel if they booked their wedding night there I can't imagine. They did refund us £50 for the inconvenience but that hardly made up for it!
