Dont go in the winter, its freezing in some rooms. The bar & restaurant are ok and nearly warm. Take wellington boots, long johns and ski wear. I had room 9 at the top of the house which was great, if you like a temperature below zero, ceiling hanging down, furniture that your granny has thrown out, and you are a ghost hunter. The coldest, spookiest, worst night I have spent anywhere in hotels around the world. ( and I have stayed in many) Perports to be 'arty'. Food is expensive and average.

I stayed in room one, exceptionally large period room with four poster bed, very clean with large bathroom. Staff are very pleasant.
Only downsides are that the hotel wasn't signposted, the full english breakfast was alittle drab,(horrible sausages), however at £50 inclusive for the night, you can't complain, anybody would be delighted, in fact I stay away nationally 2/3 times a week and have never stayed anywhere quite like it for the price.
Wouldn't hesitate to stay again, superb value!

The building is set in its own grounds and is clearly very old, first impressions were good. Very quaint and not modernised at all but the modern art adorning the walls is out of character and quite misplaced.
DO NOT accept room 4, unless you are of less than average height or a family of pygmies..... the stairway leading to the room is very very narrow and not for the unfit or unsprightly. The room is very small, in the attic, and the slant on the ceiling is awkward. The small velux windows in the roof give a little air and light but the room is uncomfortable for anything other than sleeping.
The bathroom is an even smaller room opposite, again only for the small and nifty among us. Showering was impossible, certainly in the upright position..... the maids rooms from days gone by...? Didnt impress at all.
Breakfast lacks imagination. The full English was sad, dull and boring.Tea and coffee were dispensed from thermos jugs, one each for the whole room and emptied rapidly. Refills were nowhere near as quick and it rounded off a thoroughly disappointing experience. We will not revisit.

This hotel is very attractive, and has nice lawned grounds, great for holding weddings or other events. The rooms are all different, although some are small and have many stairs. Stayed here as part of a wedding group, and so had most of the hotel to our group. The food is excellent. Maybe slightly expensive for the size of the rooms, compared to other country hotels in the area.
