“Expensive and crowded”

Combe Haven Holiday Park

My parents paid nearly £700 to take myself and my kids here for a week in the summer. This was a complete con. Loads of other people had got it for a quarter of this price by booking nearer the time. So always wait (if you really want to go to this horrible place) and book at the last minute.

The chalet's (and the caravans) are almost on top of each other. There is hardly any space between them and there are thousands of them. This means you've got no privacy, no outside space and it's noisy. There are cars everywhere and nowhere for children to play a part from a small area right up the other side of the site.

The pools are quite small and there was generally a queue of about an hour to get in. Anything interesting (like the inflatables) they charge £5 for 30 minutes. The sports facilities are in a large unattractive hut but the much positive thing about the whole place is that these are reasonably priced (£5 per person per session and the instructor is really nice).

Everybody we spoke to had problems with their chalet or caravan. Ours had loads of things missing, the electricity kept going off, it wasn't very clean, it was supposed to be in a dog-free area but everybody seemed to have dogs, the television was about 30 years old, all they gave you to clean the floor with was a broom and if you wanted to sit on the tiny piece of grass outside you had to sit on a kitchen chair.

The nearest town is St Leonards which is absolutely awful. I live in the inner city but I saw more drug deals in St Leonards in 10 minutes than I've seen in years. If you go out for the day go to Bexhill.

If you can get this place dirt cheap and you are prepared to queue for an hour for the swimming pool, you like loud and dreadful entertainment (and don't mind standing up because you won't get a table) you don't mind living on top of other people but your kids are desperate to do fencing then it's worth going. Otherwise avoid this at all costs.

Prior to booking the holiday my friend asked if they had disabled facilities and explained that she was bringing a disabled person and needed a walk in shower no steps and for the accomodation to be on the flat. She was told full disabled facilites, and that the request would be no problem she had to pay extra and move to a higher standard of accomodation the Gold standard. She arrived before me and found that they had put us in a bungalow that was on such a steep incline it was really difficult even for her and the children to negotiate the paths and car park. There was a step leading into the bungalow and then they found out it had a bathroom and no walk in shower. The bungalow was not clean and smelt musty . I arrived and was horrifed to find there was no disabled parking and then had to try and walk to the bungalow on this extremely steep slope. It was so bad I had to have two security officers to help me walk to the bungalow in the process I pulled the back of my left knee which I had explained to the security officers I had seriously injured previously. Throughout the holiday I was troubled with the pain in my knee and even on arrival home I am having difficulty walking as it is so painful.

It had been raining and the journey very long having driven over two hundred miles to find that I couldnot have a shower to ease my sore body was a shock. Neither of us were very happy we had to cope until the next morning I did not unload my car I could not use my electric scooter becasue it was so dangerous due to the very steep slope the car was parked on I certainly could not use it to go to the bungalow it was disgusting especially as I had been going to stay in a hotel but had changed as they had promised full facilitiexs.
The next morning we were told that even though we had asked for these things they were not classed as a necessity and it did not mean we would be given them even though they had been asked for and promised as they were essential. I was not impressed witht he manager who dealt with us or his awareness of disabilities. The bungalow was supposed to be gold standard it was not. He even asked my friend if she wanted to talk to the person who took the booking she said to him what was the point in that we needed tobe moved he could nto promise he would be able to do this. My friend also told him to reveiw the phone call as it would have been taped.

We were eventually moved to a caravan which was for diabled people and had a walk in shower the disabled facilites were limited and the beds not very suitable but we had already lost a day trying to sort the matter out and we had come away to have a holiday. The disabled parking space was no where near the caravan they did come and paint a yellow disabled sign on the oparking space outside the caravan on the 3rd day we were there. I did find two gentleman in the housekeeping to be extrmely helpful and at reception I had to obtain a cable to work my oxygen machine and they found me a suitable one security were also very nice . But they do not have full awareness of disabiltes to get into the swimming area to obverve the swimming I had to knock on the fire exit and hope someone would open it as there were only stairs leading into the swimming area.
The caravan was certainly an improvement on the previous bungalow but we had to clean the bathroom as it smelt of urine. It also had a long two tiered slope leading to the door fo the caravan which when you are tired was difficult to walk up. I do not know how I wouldhave coped taking suitcases up there if the staff had not seen me struggling and came to help me. The manager certainly did not arrange for any assistance so I would certainly advise that a disabled person should be careful about booking into the park if they have no able bodied person with them. This is wrong as we should not have to have to take an able bodied person with you on holdiay.

I have worked for Butlins as a nurse and found the entertainment and facilties were far more superior they had very little entertainment apart fromthe gaming machines there were little facilities certainly nothing like they have with Butlins I was very disappointed at how little was available.

The certainly not enough on the site to keep children occupied we needed to go out and had to travel by car every where we went because it certainly is not ten minutes from the sea. When I read this I though you would be able to walk to the sea you cannot.
The other thing I noticed was the land fill site which you could see from the site it was the only view. If you had no transport you would find very little to do once you had exhausted the swimming pool and the games machine.or the visit to the expensive shop.
I have no complaints about the staff I met only the manager who dealt with us he made a big thing of having to put us in a caravan that was the next grade up he just did not seem to realise they should not have taken the booking if they could not provide the faciliteis we had asked for and promised.
Hastings itself does not have very good disabled facilites I parked in a disabled parking space and then found I could not get up the pavement and had to ride my scooter along a extremely busy road till I found a dropped kerb which incidently was a pedestrian crossing area. No access to the beach and no signage indicating disabled facilities or parking.

Would recommend going to Eastbournes as the facilies better and a lot more to see and do.

Prior reviews had me expecting the worst. However the caravans were clean, and the updated facilities were very good, clean, pretty well managed and staffed.
The site is a little hilly though but not insurmountable, wheelchair users though will find it pretty diffcult going in some areas due to the steepness of some of the slopes. In many ways though its better than the usual bland flat field that caravan parks tend to be. Pool both inside and outside was fine. Overall much better than i was expecting.

“A lovely little place!!”

Combe Haven Holiday Park

Well after reading lots of awful reviews for Combe Haven, I was prepared for the worst. Me and my partner went for 4 nights in April 08 and I have to say I was surprisingly delighted with near enough every part of our stay! We got to the camp 2 hours before check in so werent expecting to be able to get our keys but the staff were very helpful and gave us our keys there and then as long as we agreed not to enter our chalet till 4 which was our check in time. This was a great help as it meant we avoided what could have been a mad rush for keys at 4! When we got to in the chalet everything was very clean/tidy and new looking, with the exception of a couple of minor things (which i'd imagine you expect with any holiday camp really!) You can tell from the facilities in the park that the place has recently been done up as everything looks very modern. The evening entertainment bar in particular was lovely! The entertainment was good fun, the swimming pool was lovely and clean and warm and the shop was very resonabley priced! All in all a very good value for money holiday!!

I was worried about what I would find after reading some of the reviews, but it was not that bad really. Caravan was clean although the beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in. We went to have afry up the first morning and found no frying pan but a brand new one wrapped in cellophane was left on our caravan steps the same day we reported it. Kitchen and lounge were lovely although very cold but gas heater did its job. Telly not very good, poor reception and we kept losing C4 althogether which was annoying when watching Desperate Housewives!!
Entertainment was very noisy and crowded but kids enjoyed it and it was ok. We enjoyed the bingo and the talent contest the best. Shop was great and the staff there worked really hard and were always friendly and helpful. All in all not a bad holiday but some of the people that were there when we were seemed a bit 'chavy' to say the least!!!

We not go back as prefer a smaller site such as All Hallows but can see why Combe Hvaen is popular and my daughter enjoyed the roller blading and archery a lot.
