At first glance The Swan appears to be a nice pub on the A35 between Lyndhurst and Emery Down. However, once you step inside things start to go downhill as we discovered during a recent stay there.
The food served is basic pub fare - there's nothing really wrong with it but it doesn't inspire in any way either (a salad consists of lettuce, tomato and cucumber - very 1970's). Its probably fair to say that the chef has some ability but sadly lacks imagination. During our meal we also noticed a large number of people complaining about the service - drinks orders being forgotton, the wrong meals being brought out, etc.
However, it is the rooms that really let The Swan down. Our first taste of their unique brand of hospitality came when we opened the fridge in the room and found it full of food left by the previous occupant. Unfortunately the previous occupant had been gone for at least a couple of weeks, and the state of their "leftovers" was really quite disgusting. The mould theme continued into the bathroom (black this time rather than blue) which hadn't had a decent clean in quite some time.
On the second day of our stay we returned to the hotel quite late to find that the room hadn't been made up. We mentioned this to the manager, who was very apologetic and assured us that the matter would be resolved.
On our third day we again returned fairly late and were not really surprised to find that the room had once again not been touched. So to recap, the room was not cleaned before we arrived nor at any time during our stay. Our own "leftovers" in the bin (which of course hadn't been emptied in three days) were now developing a healthy addition to the The Swan's mould collection, resulting in a smell that can only be described as nauseating.
We were due to stay at The Swan for longer, but decided instead to pack our things and return home. There was no way we were prepared to stay with a young child in such unsanitary conditions.
Needless to say, we would not recommed a stay at The Swan to anyone.
My best tip for choosing a good room is to stay elsewhere.
