Came down for the weekend with my fiance, to get away before our wedding. Highly recommend the Penny Farthing. Fantastic location, centre of the New Forest and a minutes walk from the main Lyndhurst high street with a choice of fab Bars & restaurants- chinese, italian, indian or traditional pub grub. The Hotel itself was a great find. Beautiful, spotless, good sized rooms, with good comfortable beds, a small bar downstairs in a lovely lounge area. Breakfast in the morning was delicious. Everything was done to a high standard and there was nothing too much for the staff- so friendly and welcoming- Will definately be back!

Stayed a night on route to Lymington and for convenience and cleanliness it was great. They offer B&B only as it is just before the High Street and there are places to eat all around. We ate at Pergolas Italian that was as efficient as any good Italian and great value. (If your on a diet forget it!). Rooms are very well maintained and spotless. Staff were very helpful suggesting where to eat and what to see. Freshly cooked full english breakfast recommended.

“do not stay at the penny farthing..it is a rip off!”

I booked a 2 day stay in this establishment on Saturday 21st September 2007. Please read on and SAVE YOUR money by not going to this establishment....there are other hotels and B&B's within Lyndhurst that give your TRUE VALUE FOR MONEY.

In synopsis:

I called the hotel on the morning of Saturday 22nd September 2007 and spoke to a French lady (Maehui?) who told me that she had a ‘cottage’ called Mad Hatter 1 that was vacant for the days requested. I asked if the hotel was in a quiet position and was told that despite being in a town, Lyndhurst, yes it was at the quiet end. I booked the room.

Thirty minutes later Maehui called me back to say that she had made a mistake and that we could only have Mad Hatter 1 for one night and would have to move into another double room for the Sunday. This was acceptable and we agreed the deal. (£209.00 inc breakfast for one morning).

When we arrived we found the following problems (and as we had driven from London we were not about to turn around and go back home):

The hotel is on a VERY BUSY (24/7) main road (I contested this with the young lady, not the French lady, who was working as reception who was rather rude and defensive making excuses for the fact that the French lady had not told me the truth)

Mad Hatter 1 smelled of damp and stale air/smoke despite our efforts to apply air freshener we could not move this smell
The heating did not work
No tea/coffee facilities in the room
At night and early in the morning we were constantly awoken by workman parking three large vans in the car park on which this cottage backs onto
Pubic hair in the bath (we were reluctant to eat in your establishment due to the hygiene issues we faced therefore did not indulge in breakfast as paid for)

The move into the double room, 'Triumph', on the second day subjected us to even more issues, namely the constant noise of traffic and lorries…I thought that I was standing in the pit-stop at Brands Hatch!

I found the hotel via a link on the [--] website and was rather surprised that we would be misled at the point of booking.

I am seeking some form of compensation from the manager and will update this reveiw with his response.

D Power

I have also informed The New Forest Directory/Website [--] who include this hotel as one of their reccomended hotels.

Management Response

“You cannot please all the people all the time”. It is very disheartening to receive a complaint on any matter but good to make us check out why and try to address them?
We have had our busiest year yet (we have been here 15 years) and our guest book and enormous number of repeat bookings is testimony to many, many very happy customers. The week end in question was the second weekend of Southampton Boat Show and hence our difficulty in trying to accommodate this Guest. To answer the specific points of the above complaint:-
The Penny Farthing Hotel IS in centrally situated in Lyndhurst the “Capital Village” of the New Forest, it IS busy weekends throughout the summer and like all establishments in similar locations wherever, noise will be heard. You cannot enjoy a village centre location with the benefits of a large private car park, many restaurants & pubs, gift shops, attractions, cash points, The New Forest Visitor Centre on the doorstep and have peace and tranquillity.
If you wish for a totally peaceful “New Forest” week end do not choose us! There are Cottages, B&B’s and Hotels situated in rural locations that offer this, Please choose them or do call us and we can recommend some excellent places and websites with such information. We are very lucky to be full each week end and have no wish or need to falsely entice guests to stay here against their true requirements.
At no time during the guests stay or at checkout were any matters mentioned. On the opening page of our Cottages and Hotel Room information directory the first line clearly states ~ I quote “We try to be cheerful and unobtrusive enabling you to have a relaxing and comfortable time. Please do let us know if something is not right. Left your toothbrush, hairdryer or a needle and thread? Just ask we may have one!!!”
We would have supplied tea/coffee etc to the apartment, the heating works fine and had been used before and since (new apartment ~ new Worcester combi boiler). A Pubic hair in the bath is unfortunate and I must apolagise for. Biased, as I may be, I believe from comments in our guest book, talking to regulars and tourists, AA & Visit Britain reports (accolade ~ Four Star Guest accommodation) from anonymous inspectors, the Hotel is very clean but alas we are not infallible and there will be errors. Please rest assured we try our best and whether staying or just in the area if you would like to view some rooms or self catering properties any day just call in, no appointment necessary, and see for yourself, we are proud and have nothing to hide and would be delighted to show what we have to offer.
The guest requested the Triumph Room as seen on our website; it is on the front of the Hotel. We could have moved the booking to a room at the rear or into our Cottage annexe set back from the road if requested.
We will not be refunding money as requested by the complainant as we had no opportunity to resolve matters and do not mislead guests. Please view our Website and if you have any special requests or queries please call and we will do our best to oblige. Do not eat all the steak and then ask for your money back!
The New Forest is now a National Park, protected and beautiful throughout the year. Please use your internet, find the accommodation you need and come, share, relax and enjoy!

Best wishes to all travellers new and old ~ Penny Farthing Hotel.

I have stayed at the Penny Farthing on two occaisions whilst in the south on business. Both times I found the hotel to be immaculately clean and the staff very pleasant and helpful. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about the hotel whatsoever. I intend staying at the hotel with my family later on in the year, and using it's location in the "Capital of the New Forest" as a base to explore the surrounding areas.
