We visited Goudhurst in the summer months and fell in love with the place. Thought the Star & Eagle looked so interesting and full of character, so booked an overnight stay.
The room was very clean, comfortable bed, lovely view of the countryside. Loved the olde world surroundings. Only thing missing was customer service, absolutely non-existent, in fact bordered on rudeness, spoilt the whole atmosphere of the place. So disappointed and it was my birthday too. Because of this I refused to eat in the restaurant, went down to the Vine Inn where they were warm and friendly, in fact they saved the day!
Relief to escape the 'chilly' atmosphere. I was hoping to experience some spooks that evening, but sadly the 'living' destroyed any atmosphere in the place.

Sorry to learn you didin't enjoy your stay. You stayed with us last Thursday in room 4 overlooking the countryside. There was a problem with the card details you had given to secure and pay your bill when you booked and your card was declined when it was screened on arrival. Unfortunatly all hotels do take payment in adavnce or screen the card and secure the amount of estimated spend during your stay. I had to insist on some form of payment before we would let it go any further and a restaurant meal and drinks were involved. (I had been left with a bill for £215 a few days earlier from a very nice couple who stayed in our four poster, had a meal & wine and then did a runner, took our key and of course the card was declined - no money in the account. It is now in the hands of the police.) So you can't blame me for being a bit insistant. You told me you were intending paying by cash but you would have to go to Cranbrook in the morning to get the cash from the cash machine. I presume with the same card? After insisting on a card for payment the man that you were with produced another but didn't want me to use it, which just didn't make sense. I managed to get the payment from him but you were not very pleased. I dealt with the situation in a quiet, polite and professional way. The road at the front of the hotel is quiet at night as we are in a village. They are also double glazed.
