I booked this hotel for a break with my husband. I was a bit dubious and read lots of the reviews. the majority were very good but a few were bad. Once i stepped through the door i was breathless. it was beautiful. people who said it was dark and gloomy must not realise what atmosphere is. the oil paitings on the walls, the decor, it was just lovely. when you enter the lobby you step down to the reception where around the corner is a cosy bar with an open fire. in the bar there were lots of photos on the walls of people who came to fish. The staff were happy to book a day and organise gear hire to do salmon fishing. there was an oportinuty to go shooting on private land near by and if you were luck to catch a salmon they would get it smoked and sent to you at home!
Once we were given our room key we were asked if they could help with our bags. We were in the state, sir walter scott room which was up a grand staircase to the second floor.
As the house was rebuilt in the 1800's it has an original gothic feel.
on the 1st floor you walked through double stained glass doors in to the first lounge where there is a large open fireplace. There was a choice of magazines from vogue to country living and a billiards room, tv room and then the dining room.
The state room that we stayed in was huge! the fourposter bed was lovely and clean and the room was spotless, we were given bathrobes which were also beautifuly clean and the bathroom was lovely. The stay was peaceful and relaxing, the food was five star (- try the orange icecream and chocolate fondant) and the staff were very professional and happy.
The only thing i would suggest would be take your laptop to watch some movies as the tv is pretty small and only has a few channels but thats not what we came to do so it didnt bother us.
The hotel is and hour and a half from Edinburgh's sherif's hall park and ride (remember the busses only take change and it was 1 pound 50 return) through picturesque countyside, we seen deer when driving back and Edninburgh is a lovely place to visit too.
We are both 26 years old and found it to be a very romantic venue.
