We booked the hotel on the strength of its website and one previous review on Tripadvisor, and it is fair to say that the hotel's amenities are not quite as glowing as its publicity would suggest. Our standard room had a double bed with just enough space on either side to squeeze in a bedside cabinet. The furniture and paintwork were starting to show signs of wear but the soft furnishings were attractive. However, the en suite bathroom was a disappointment and would have required a complete refit to make it look like the picture on the hotel's website. It was clean and functional with an excellent hot shower. Breakfast was served in an adjacent building, reached through an enclosed glass corridor. The food was not cooked to order but kept reasonably hot in a self-service, covered hotplate. Interestingly, just off the restaurant is the booking hall of Croydon Aerodrome, with pictures and memorabila of London's original airport lining its walls. A vintage bus and taxi, parked outside the hotel, added to the period feel. Parking is free, which is not necessarily the case with cheaper hotels in central Croydon. Our double room with English breakfast cost £72, and fortunately we had brought the e-mailed confirmation with us, as the hotel presented us with a bill for £75.
We enjoyed our one night stay and thought it value for money but are not tempted to return.
