I was given a voucher for my birthday and chose the Farnham House Hotel to spend a night with my husband. We explored Farham had a lovely lunch and then went to the hotel. The drive up to the hotel is stunning with horses in fields either side. The hotel itself is a lovely old manor house with wonderful pretty grounds. We booked in and went up the creaky old staircase to our room which was right at the top. The room was small but clean with a small window with a view of the gardens. We dumped our bag and went down and had a couple of drinks, we sat outside on the lawn taking in the peace and quiet. A little later we went back up to the room and my husband went into the shower, this was a complete disaster, the shower is so forceful and hot and there was no control over it, he flooded the bathroom and he was not happy with the shower. at all. We went down to dinner and sat by the window which was lovely but that was all. I am not a fussy eater but the food was awful, we ordered the British Tapas, the potted shrimps were caked in fatty butter and it was difficult to get the fat off the prawns, the haloumi came with no dipping sauce and the bread was a joke, 2 slices of sliced bread cut up!!. The waiter brought a bottle of wine over, didn't get me to taste it just poured it in the glass, he looked slovenly and unprofessional. The table cloth was dirty and although we were seated first he took other peoples orders before ours. We then got our main meals, my husband had Fish Pie, it was disgusting no taste at all, he left some of it which he never does. I had a meat dish but there was only parsnips and potatoes with it, no colourful vegetables. My husband usually has a dessert but we were so disappointed with the meal that he decided not to venture on this course. We then went to bed, the bed was comfortable but very small and we did not sleep well. The breakfast was OK and quite a good choice but again the table cloth was dirty, I asked for brown toast but got white and the table next to us got black toast (burnt). When we checked out they had not taken the voucher off our bill so that had to be sorted but the girls on reception were very pleasant. One of my jobs is to waitress and I think there needs to be some training in this hotel and I work for a family restaurant not a posh one so I do not expect silver service but I feel that the waiting staff need to be more professional. We certainly would not stay at this hotel again.
