“Delicious tea”

Nutfield Priory Hotel & Spa

25 Feb 2008

We visited the hotel just for a Champagne tea for eight people to celebrate a special birthday. Completely lived up to expectations - the sandwiches, large scones, cakes/pastries were delicious and home-made - the preserve was delicious too.

The staff were helpful, friendly and polite. We had tea in the library in the large bay window - better views in winter when there are no leaves on the trees. The building really is impressive and a great backdrop to any occasion.

We also had a lunch there with some friends a couple of weeks earlier. With drinks, coffee, etc. it may not be cheap but the food we had was beautifully cooked and the Cloisters restaurant a lovely setting.

We will be going back.

“Mixed thoughts”

Nutfield Priory Hotel & Spa

I booked this stay through the handpicked hotels website due to a winter offer they were promoting. Only after booking did I stumble across the reviews on Tripadviser.
Overall, my girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay. However, less tolerant individuals could be very frustrated by the massively fluctuating service levels we were provided with.
Firstly, the Spa. The short walk to the spa was not necessarily an issue for us, but unfortunately, on going to the spa on Friday afternoon we were told that everything was booked and we could not have any treatments over the weekend. The remainder of the building is a public leisure centre. If you are looking for a relaxing Spa weekend, do not come to Nutfield.
The hotel itself was good overall, although with reflection, the majority of good service provided was in order to make up for previous errors.
Initially, reception sent us to the the wrong floor for our room. The bottle of wine ordered as part of our reservation was not provided. On calling down to reception, it still did not appear. Only a further call to reception saw the wine finally appear.
We popped down to reception about 5pm to ask for the menu for the restaurant. Shortly after this, we called to book a table and were informed that the restaurant was fully booked.
For convenience, we ordered room service. After 50 minutes I called to chase our order only to be told it was not on the system. In their defence, they then put our order through on the house.
Little things niggled during the stay - the cold water tap was hot, we were woken at 8am by staff seemingly shouting to each other in the corridors - both small-ish points, but in addition more frustrating than the sum of their parts.

That does seem like a lot of negatives, but despite these points, staff were mainly courteous, friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was excellent, the building fantastic and the views stunning.

To echo previous reviews, this should be an excellent hotel but somehow snatches mediocrity and slight frustration from the jaws of brilliance.

I probably would not stay again, but would recommend the breakfast for a Sunday morning treat.

“Such a wonderful hotel”

We stayed at the hotel for our wedding night on Saturday 5 January this year. We booked the Byron Suite which is built in one of the towers of the hotel. We absolutely love this place. We have stayed here before in a standard room and still found no fault whatsoever. The byron suite was fantastic. Spread over 2 floors in the tower, there is an enormous bathroom with claw foot bath and double shower. The dressing room is ample with a staircase up to the main bedroom. The four poster bed is extremely comfortable and the seating area with huge plasma tops it all off. The hotel staff were extremely accommodating - our arrival in the early hours was met with smiling faces, a bottle of bubbly and sandwiches. The room service breakfast was gorgeous - although the main restaurant is well worth a visit.

All in all, I can't fault this hotel. The views, the gardens, internal rooms and bedrooms are all a delight. Home from home!

We stayed at this hotel last night and couldn't really fault it.

We had booked a deluxe room through handpicked.co.uk and weren't disappointed. It was spacious, modern and clean with beautiful furnishings. It overlooked the front courtyard and was very quiet.

We had booked an afternoon tea and went for the champagne option. It was £39 for two which is fairly expensive but worth every penny! You get enough sandwiches and cakes to feed a family of 4!

We ate in their restaurant that night (although were still pretty full from tea!) and couldn't find fault with the food or the service. We had three courses from their A La Carte menu and the the food was delicious. Again it was expensive but we weren't rushed and nothing was too much trouble. Perhaps because there was only two of us we got better service than those in a group?

We didn't use the spa - there just wasn't time. I agree with previous comments, it isn't really in keeping with the hotel and was a bit of a walk to get to but at least you had the option.

All staff were extremely polite and helpful and I would definitely go back to this hotel for a special occasion.

We have just returned from a stay at Nutfield having had a works do there.

The reviews make a lot of sense to me, as this does seem to be a place that "snatches defeat from the jaws of victory" at many opportunities!

The Hotel itself is absolutely stunning. The overall ambience of the place is difficult to fault in terms of the building, and communal areas. The spa itself does not seem to match this ambience and is physically separate to the hotel, so you have a 150 yard walk across the car parks to get to it. This put us off taking the kids for a swim on a cold winter day.

We stayed in the Wordsworth suite on the first floor which is utterly massive. They provided us with two childrens beds and the room swallowed them whole without a thought. The Plasma screen is very large and impressive, rising out of a cabinet electronically (via the most complicated remote control you are likely to find) and the views across the countryside are simply breathtaking.

In my view, this place needs a new management approach, as the staff are incredibly inconsistent. There were two members of staff in the bar - one who was flexible, accommodating and courteous, the other who was sour - faced, uncommunicative and was even hanging up the phone on people! The check in staff were very friendly, although there was an air of disrganisation around getting rooms ready with many other guests sat around waiting for their rooms. The food really was not good at all. Our evening meals in a private dining room were of a poor standard, and staff did not even know exactly what they were carrying. No choices were given as to how you wanted your steak cooking - it simply arrived, cooked medium and nearly cold. Breakfast was little better. The smoked salmon and scrambled eggs were incredibly rubbery, looking like they had been sat out for some time, and the cooked breakfast had obviously been keeping warm in an oven / grill, as it was dried out completely.

I certainly would consider returning, if there was a change in ownership / management, otherwise I would consider it a "risk" if I was paying a lot of money out of my own pocket.
