“Looks great, terrible service, Fawlty Towers!”

Nutfield Priory Hotel & Spa

I booked a weekend break at the Nutfield Priory for my partners b-day. Looks great when you approach, the check in staff were helpful. Arrived 2.30 was told room was not ready, and they would call my mobile when it was. Went to the bar, waited 10 minutes to be served as there was no one around. 3.30 came and went, with no call and when I went to the desk they happily gave me the key. Got to the room, looked fine, the wine I ordered was there but our bags weren't. Went and collected my bags from reception.

Had a wander over to the spa what is adjacent from the hotel. If you are expecting a real spa, you will be very disapointed! On entering the place it was like visiting my local swimming pool/leisure centre. Not inviting in the least. There are much better spas in the area and after going to somewhere like Rowhill Grange, it doesnt come close.
We had a table booked for 8.45pm for dinner (booked a few weeks previously). We went down for dinner and sat in the main area for 15 minutes before having to reapproach the staff for a drink and menus. 9.15 drinks and menus arrived. 9.30 Others around us were getting agitated also about the lack of service and reservations which had been and gone, so we asked if there was any chance of having our table. We were told they were staggering the tables for the chef, at which point we asked shouldnt that happen when they take reservations!
9.45 Got taken into a half empty restaurnat and sat at our table, along with many other disatisfied diners.

10pm Starters arrive, three times! Yes they couldnt even deliver the right starters to the right tables, and shambles. 10.30 Main course arrives, by now we had had enough and had gone past the point of hunger, coupled to my partner needing to be down for breakfast at 8am as a massage was booked for 9am. Everyone in the restaurant thought it was some kind of joke.

Breakfast was fine, good infact, and my partner enjoyed her massage. On checking out we complained about the terrible service throughout, at which point other guests chipped in, so we were asked to wait in the lounge area for the manager.

The manager apologised and was receptive, but when I pointed out that I had prepaid for the weekend and a 3 course dinner we couldnt eat, she offered to knock the drinks off the bill. I replied that I was happy to pay for a massage but that was all, at which point she agreed that she would reduce the bill but only to what I had prepaid (£140). Wanting to not waste any more of our weekend, I agreed and left feeling robbed.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, I have received better service from Travelodge and that only costs £30!

“Fabulous!”

Nutfield Priory Hotel & Spa

We booked one of the winter breaks that the hotel was offering for last weekend. We were in a classic room, which was more than comfortable, and in fact quite luxurious in many of the features, such as the plasma tv and bathroom facilities. A bottle of wine was awaiting us.

We used the spa/health facilities on arrival. The pool is not huge but the changing facilities are nice, and on par with an expensive gym or health club. There is a nice steam room and sauna, and a small jacuzzi. I really enjoyed our time in there and it was not overcrowded.

Our evening meal was included in the price and I have to say it was impeccable! The service was courteous and friendly but not intrusive. We were made to feel like VIPs! The food was delicious and the wine reasonably priced. Having glanced at the final bill, I must say that the offer we had taken up was incredible value, as we paid almost as much for dinner, bed and breakfast as the meal cost! Worth every penny. I thought I would never eat again after eating every last morsel, but the breakfast the next day was superb as well and I couldn't resist! There was a huge selection of juices, fruit, continental foods and a multitude of cooked breakfasts.

On the morning of departure (we were given a complimentary late check out), we had treatments at the spa which is in a separate wing of the health club building. The treatments were lovely, the staff polite and the surroundings very relaxing.

The reception staff were helpful and efficient. The building itself and the views are really lovely and very grand.

I would have paid the normal rates for this hotel, and think that the deal we got was excellent value. The spa treatments were a reasonable price too. We booked our treatments when we booked the room - I would do this again as I think they were fully booked.

I will definitely be visiting again!

“Decadence at its best”

Nutfield Priory Hotel & Spa

27 Feb 2008

Wow, wow, wow! This has to be the most delightful hotel I have ever stayed at. This old victorian manor house is stunning. Our room was very contemporary, with a plasma tv, dvd player, sofa chairs and a speaker system, which allowed us to hear music in the bathroom! We had a wonderful view onto stunning countryside. The evening meal was ok, nothing special, but this was forgiven as the staff were so attentive to our every need. The spa is just a few minutes walk from the main hotel.

“Delicious tea”

Nutfield Priory Hotel & Spa

25 Feb 2008

We visited the hotel just for a Champagne tea for eight people to celebrate a special birthday. Completely lived up to expectations - the sandwiches, large scones, cakes/pastries were delicious and home-made - the preserve was delicious too.

The staff were helpful, friendly and polite. We had tea in the library in the large bay window - better views in winter when there are no leaves on the trees. The building really is impressive and a great backdrop to any occasion.

We also had a lunch there with some friends a couple of weeks earlier. With drinks, coffee, etc. it may not be cheap but the food we had was beautifully cooked and the Cloisters restaurant a lovely setting.

We will be going back.

“Mixed thoughts”

Nutfield Priory Hotel & Spa

11 Feb 2008

I booked this stay through the handpicked hotels website due to a winter offer they were promoting. Only after booking did I stumble across the reviews on Tripadviser.
Overall, my girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay. However, less tolerant individuals could be very frustrated by the massively fluctuating service levels we were provided with.
Firstly, the Spa. The short walk to the spa was not necessarily an issue for us, but unfortunately, on going to the spa on Friday afternoon we were told that everything was booked and we could not have any treatments over the weekend. The remainder of the building is a public leisure centre. If you are looking for a relaxing Spa weekend, do not come to Nutfield.
The hotel itself was good overall, although with reflection, the majority of good service provided was in order to make up for previous errors.
Initially, reception sent us to the the wrong floor for our room. The bottle of wine ordered as part of our reservation was not provided. On calling down to reception, it still did not appear. Only a further call to reception saw the wine finally appear.
We popped down to reception about 5pm to ask for the menu for the restaurant. Shortly after this, we called to book a table and were informed that the restaurant was fully booked.
For convenience, we ordered room service. After 50 minutes I called to chase our order only to be told it was not on the system. In their defence, they then put our order through on the house.
Little things niggled during the stay - the cold water tap was hot, we were woken at 8am by staff seemingly shouting to each other in the corridors - both small-ish points, but in addition more frustrating than the sum of their parts.

That does seem like a lot of negatives, but despite these points, staff were mainly courteous, friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was excellent, the building fantastic and the views stunning.

To echo previous reviews, this should be an excellent hotel but somehow snatches mediocrity and slight frustration from the jaws of brilliance.

I probably would not stay again, but would recommend the breakfast for a Sunday morning treat.
