South Lodge is an hotel we have visited before and we were looking forward to staying there for a break away and we couldn't have been more pleased.

Since our previous visit, there has been an extension built and they are in the process of more building to provide 40 more bedrooms - all sypathetically constucted in the style of the orginal property.

We booked a Sunday night at reduced rate DBB for a juinior suite but they had kindly upgraded us and we had the Lady Clementine room - it was huge, luxurious and had a wonderul terrace and view to the front lawns. The bathroom, with roll top bath and roman walk in shower, twin washbasins and underfloor heating was the ultimate in luxury. All the little extras were much appreciated.

Dinner was just as we had remembered and faultless. If ever you want to enjoy and savour a chef's artistry, this is the place to go. Even coffee in the drawing room was special with chilled chocolates offered (with the waiter explaining the centres). Pure works of art in chocolate.

It would be hard to imagine a place to beat this experience and I do beleive you have to pay to get something special - after all, staffing somewhere like this to provide the high standards they strive for, and achieve, costs dear.

We will be back and look forward to it immensely.

“Overpriced!”

Overpriced

The room was clean, with period details in the old mansion, but the lampshades and draperies rather tired. The king bed was two singles put together, but not on the same level. New upscale bathrooms.

Lots of wonderful paneling in the building. The chairs in the lobbies are handsome, but the bottom sags in all of them and they are in dreary materials and the lamps are cockeyed.. They do not offer the service and the environment that justifies their prices. Dinner was very overpriced. Either they have to go to Chewton Glen, Alexander House or Summer Lodge and see how it is done and maintain their prices --- or be more realistic for what they offer.

They very much need to pretty the place up with landscaping around the entry. It is bare, but has possibilities. They are adding on a large wing. They will have to make the hotel less institutional looking if it is to thrive.

Loved it!! Wanted to move in permanently! I am serious.
We were moving to Horsham and so were house hunting and stayed here. The grounds are stunning, the staff are nice, the rooms are fabulous. There are really nice little touches, like home made biscuits in a jar beside your bed, port in a crystal carafe, gorgeous shampoo etc in the bathrooms.

I have stayed in loads of really nice hotels, the Bellagio/Four Seasons etc and this is up there, in a country manor type of way!

It would make a great weekend trip, for some relaxation.

“Married here”

South Lodge Hotel

I have stayed at South Lodge many times with work but decided to have my wedding here. The setting is just beautiful. I have stayed in a few rooms in the old building and all are full of character. The bars and lounge areas are very olde English/log fires. This is a very classy establishment. Any query on the bill was simply taken off rather than argued about. To the guest who complained of the shower etc, this is an old country house and as such retains its charm, if you want modern - go to a motel!!
A year down the line - our guests still enthuse about this wonderful location. This is a beautiful true country hotel, wonderful grounds....you will not be disappointed.

To celebrate the first anniversary of our relationship we decided to book a late break on lastminute.com. The deal I found for South Lodge was more than we'd normally spend on 1 night in a hotel, but it did include dinner and breakfast.

We arrived mid-afternoon and were shown to our room by the extremely helpful porter. The rooms are all absolutely beautiful, and have some lovely features such as the pet dog (toy) which takes the place of a "do not disturb" sign, you just put it outside the bedroom door. I also loved the enormous shower, with its rain bars.

We booked a table for dinner (included in our package) for 8pm so went down to the bar at 7.30 for a drink. The bar and lounge are both absolutely beautiful too. The food was fabulous, I cannot rave enough about the lamb! Not too sure about the roquefort ice cream - but it had to be tried!

Unfortunately the restaurant had run out of our first choice of wine, but the recommendation of trying some lebanese wine was curious but well worth it!

We went back to the lounge after dinner and played board games and drank port. The staff were all exceptionally friendly, and didn't make us feel uncomfortable in what is a very high class establishment!

I thoroughly recommend South Lodge for anyone who wants a weekend of pure luxury.
