Rightly or wrongly, I never expect much from an airport hotel so it's nice when it turns out to be a better experience than you anticipated. It's not perfect but far better than a lot of other airport hotels we've stayed in and, a much better price, hence me saying it was 'very good'.
Kristin, the receptionist who checked us in, was first class, you'd be hard pressed to match her lovely attitude and standard. She was very efficient, had a super manner and we had a great laugh as well.
We were in room 4263. It was ok in size. The paintwork above the curtains was peeling and some noticeable scuff marks on the walls but with everyone heaving suitcases in and out that wasn't a surprise.
Edges of the carpets were dusty and, around the furniture legs and under the tv cabinet. The window was very small, which would have been fine but for some reason the interior decorator had put a massive curtain covering the rest of the wall, so the room felt dark and I had a nagging feeling all the time I wanted to open the 'closed' curtain!
There was a trouser press, iron and ironing board and hairdryer in the room but no safe which was annoying as we had to carry all our passports/money etc around all the time!
The bed was very comfortable and we both slept soundly.
Beverage tray had nice sized mugs but only full milk offered. We needed more coffee sachets so I rang to ask for more. I rang at 4.35pm and by 4.40pm a whole basket of coffee sachets/tea bags/biscuits and milk had arrived! Excellent service! Also the chap bought up a new remote control as the one in the room refused to work!
Bathroom was small and tatty. Some tiles had been replaced - very badly - behind the main tap, they didn't remotely match the rest of the tiles! There were little bits of mould on the ceiling. Water was piping hot and toiletries good.
We'd got a very good advance deal that included breakfast. Breakfast was great! Wide and good choice of food. Fruit, cheeses, ham, cereals, breads, croissants, bagels, pastries.... the yoghut with blackberries and nuts and apricots was excellent! The slice and toast your own bread delicious. I must say we had loads to eat and luckily we did as our flight was delayed 3 hours! Hot breakfast, apart from the bacon and veggie sausages which looked pale and fat not cooked, was fine. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Tea and coffee was bought to the table.
So, we left for Jamaica refreshed and full! I'd return to the Hilton definitely if I was flying from Gatwick again.
