Anyone who stays here should carefully check for bedbugs and lice. This was my first encounter with bedbugs at a hotel. I did an initial check and saw nothing suspicious. That the bed had no headboard should have been a clue. The next morning, the critters were there. They were inside the mattress. I spoke to the desk clerk who shrugged and said they spray the rooms monthly. No apology. No offer to examine the room. Obviously, the critters are resistant to whatever insecticide is used.
I was forced to put my overnight bag, garment bag and belongings into those big leaf bags (sprayed with Raid Ant Killer) as a precaution, and leave the items outside for several days. Because my visit was for a family funeral, I worried about spreading bedbugs to my relatives. Or to my home.
Another issue is security. Someone in the past had obviously forced a knife into the doorframe to bypass the locking system. At least the door was still secure. The back parking lot seems secure enough. Be careful trying to access U.S. Route 23 as the motel sits up on a hill and it can be hard to see traffic.
The free breakfast is limited to cereal, pastries, and do-it-yourself waffles. No fresh fruit. Coffee is okay. Supposedly the motel provides free newspapers but I only saw a day-old USAToday. There is a pool but it looked closed.
As for meals, a McDonalds is nearby but your best bet is downtown Portsmouth. Some options, about three miles south on Route 23, include Bob Evans (family style) and a Dakota Steakhouse. My relatives tell me there are reasonably good local upscale places (for Portsmouth) also downtown. Most places close by 9-10 pm weekdays, later on weekends.
There are few decent lodging options in the area. Not many entertainment options. Come see the levee murals, old buildings, museum and quaint shops. A nice day trip. This is a poor but proud Ohio River town with a serious drug problem and needs all the help it can get.
P.S. I sent an e-mail to the corporate owner about the motel. They replied, seem very concerned and said to expect phone call from the motel manager.
