I stayed at the Sheraton Oklahoma City the night of Saturday, March 8, 2008 for a Priceline rate of $62.
The Sheraton Oklahoma City is located in downtown Oklahoma City on the northwest corner of Sheridan and Broadway. The hotel is very conveniently located across the street from the Cox Convention Center (formerly Myriad Convention Center) and the Myriad Botanical Garden/Crystal Bridge, and is within walking distance of the Bricktown dining/entertainment district and Ford Center arena. The hotel is within short driving distance to Civic Center Music Hall, Oklahoma City Museum of Art and the Oklahoma National Memorial (Murrah building site).
The hotel is a multi-story high-rise building, typical of downtown hotels. A covered front entrance with bell station makes arrival/unloading easy. I was greeted upon my arrival by a polite bellhop who helped me carry bags to the front desk while I checked in. The Century Center parking garage is attached to the hotel. You can pay for parking at check-in – as I recall, it was $12/day, with in/out privileges. I was given a tag to hang from my rear view mirror when I checked in. One thing to note: To access/leave the garage you have to use a somewhat scary spiral entrance/exit ramp. I was okay with this, but this might be an issue for someone driving a minivan or SUV. However, the convenience of parking in an attached garage outweighed that annoyance.
Check-in was very efficient, professional and gracious; with no mention whatsoever of Priceline. I had my key card in about 3 minutes. $50 was held on my credit card for incidentals, and I was informed of this (which I appreciated).
The lobby is spacious, and has a restaurant and cocktail lounge just off the entrance. You can get breakfast/lunch/sandwiches and such in the lounge. I did not use either, so I cannot comment on them. There is a day spa on premises (signs in the lobby were advertising hot stone massage). On the third floor are a fitness center, and an outdoor swimming pool. Again, I did not use any of these. I did catch a glimpse of the swimming pool coming/going from the garage, and it appeared fairly utilitarian.
Elevators were plentiful – I never had to wait long for an elevator. The hotel is completely non-smoking, but I did have to walk through cigarette smoke going to/from the garage (smokers would hang out in the connecting bridge). The halls on the third and fourth floors were on the stuffy side.
I received a room on fourth floor, across from the ice machine and near the elevators. Much to my relief, noise was not a problem. My room had a view of the Renaissance Hotel and Cox Center across the street. The immaculate room was furnished with upscale furnishings and artwork, and a striking indigo blue accent wall. My favorite was the incredibly comfortable Sweet Sleeper bed with plenty of pillows/blankets. (The Sweet Sleeper bed is the best aspect of Sheraton properties, in my opinion). Other furnishings included two upholstered side chairs/ottomans, side table, end tables on either side of the king-size bed, and a standard armoire with standard television.
There was a good size desk/work area, but I had to plug my computer into the outlet on the lamp base. There was a bottle of water on the desk, with a tag attached announcing I would be charged $1.50 for consumption of said water. Thanks, but no thanks. A one-cup coffee maker was on the desk, complete with four packets of Starbucks coffee (I did not use). Why, oh why, the tacky paper coffee cups/plastic bathroom glasses in an upscale hotel? This is so beneath the level of a hotel of this quality. I know some people will start claiming this landfill (that’s what it is, it produces more trash and is bad for the environment) is more “sanitary.” My answer to that is hotels need to do a better job of training their staff on proper sanitation techniques (the Oklahoma Health Department provides excellent training on sanitation). Sheraton needs to show some concern for the environment and not insult the standards of their guests by using real glasses and mugs in guestrooms, and ditch the tacky, cheap disposables. Here endeth my rant on ticky-tacky disposable glasses. On the upside, there was plenty of closet space, including iron/ironing board, though the sliding doors got off their track. I also liked the digital thermostat, which made it easy to adjust heating/cooling to my liking.
Internet access generally good (wireless, $15/day), but I did experience a brief down period. The initial sign-on was slightly confusing, but once I signed up, everything was OK (save the aforementioned downtime).
The bathroom was small, but well-appointed. I was okay with this, but the size could be a problem for more than one person using the room. The bathroom featured a granite sink top with new fixtures, and what appeared to be a new toilet. Toiletries (soap, shampoo & conditioner) were of good quality, and the ample towels were soft and absorbent. The bath also included a wall-mounted hairdryer.
I decided to take the plunge and order room service breakfast. Breakfast arrived promptly and was hot, not lukewarm. The food was of good quality – no skimping in the condiments, and the link sausage was the best I’d had in a long time. My server was very polite and professional.
Check-out was fast, efficient and gracious. I was on my way in less than 3 minutes.
The Sheraton Oklahoma City is definitely a business-oriented hotel, and given the plentiful meeting facilities and its location across from Cox Center, it caters to conventions/conferences. Families, particularly families with children and teens who require a swimming pool and lots of bathroom space, are apt to be disappointed. Persons who object to paying for parking would be advised to find a hotel in the area around Penn Square Mall, Baptist Medical Center or Quail Springs, where you don’t have to pay for parking. But for business-oriented travelers, or couples looking for a romantic weekend in Oklahoma City, the Sheraton Oklahoma City is your place! If you can get it on a Priceline bid, so much the better, but I would be willing to pay the full tariff for a special weekend treat.
