Just returned from a visit to Portland, and we had a multi-night stay at the Inn at Northrup Station. We originally chose it because of the decent price and free on-site parking (though be warned that you might have to park on the street if you arrive at the wrong time - there aren't quite enough spaces for all guests if fully booked).
The inn is in a great location - the streetcar stops out front (free tickets at the front desk), and it takes about 10 minutes to get right into downtown Portland - you could walk it in a brisk 30 minutes if you wanted. Shopping and restaurants on 23rd Street are nearby also - very very hip area, almost nauseatingly so, but safe and fun and lots of varied architecture around.
The inn was very clean and well-maintained, and very colorful - bright colours abound, and there are lots of nice funky touches - big bowls of candy in the lounge, free newspapers, two TVs in each suite (which come with a full kitchen). The staff were very helpful with all our questions.
Me and my wife's only complaint was we found the beds somewhat hard and uncomfortable, and we could never get the temperature quite right - it got too hot and dry at night (and it shouldn't have, because Portland was very cool and damp when we stayed there), yet the a/c was too loud to keep on, and we couldn't prop the balcony door open effectively. Minor quibbles, but it can make or break a stay to have a comfortable bed or not. The walls were maybe a bit thinner than I would have expected also - I suspect the building may have been a converted apartment complex from the 50s or 60s.
All in all, however, we would definitely stay here again when returning to Portland. Recommended.
