The Garden View Restaurant is located in the Oregon Garden Resort , on the property of the wonderful Oregon Garden. (A botanical garden in Silverton, Oregon). Now, we like this hotel quite a bit (see my separate review) -the restaurant not so much.
This was our second stay at the Resort, and the second time we attempted to get a decent vegetarian meal at this restaurant. Now, I fully understand that we are in the minority food wise, but still, if a restaurant is going to offer a vegetarian main dish on its menu, seeing as how this establishment projects itself as rather high-end, they should at least make the effort to produce a fine meal.
When we first visited about a year ago, the veg offering was a very greasy pasta with veggi sausages. Poor at best.
This time we started with two appetizers:
- The "WILD MUSHROOM RHAPSODY" (mushrooms and vegetables in filo.) This had quite decent flavor, but the filo was overly oily. Too bad, with a lighter hand on the oil, this could have been a winner.
- "ROASTED GARLIC AND GOAT CHEESE CROSTINI ". Very good, simple dish. Best thing we have had there.
We followed that with the Field Greens salad. High quality, fresh ingredients. But WAY TOO MUCH dressing. (The heavy hand seems to be a theme in this kitchen!)
Finally we tried --and I meant that quite literally -- the "VEGETABLE PENNE" (Asparagus, diced tomatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables lightly sauteed in oil and lemon juice with capers.) This dish proved INEDIBLE! Whoever made it had doused it quite heavily in lemon juice. Not a spritz or a light squeeze for brightness. The dish tasted soapy and dreadfully acidic. Horrible!
(The waitress did apologize and took it off our bill and even comped us for my glass of wine.) So, even though the service was pleasant, if you are looking for a good non-meat meal in Silverton, I suggest that you look elsewhere.
