“Decent room if you can find it”

Best Western Ardsley House Hotel

20 Aug 2007

Accommodated here this weekend and I will never ever do so again.

I stayed in the new wing which although the room was acceptable was six flights of stairs and from the warren of tunnels a country mile from reception.

No lifts, porters on a break, poor quality breakfast, endless local revellers using this as a starting and ending point to their night out in Barnsley.

Car park full of the said revellers cars, rude inattentive staff this place really has it all. A bargain @ £145.00 for an executive room, God only knows what the standard rooms are like.

We stayed overnight after attending a ball at the Hotel. The function and the function room were ideal to host such events and the staff were helpful although the waiting staff were young and rather inexperienced.
The hotel room was clean although rather dated, as were the corridors and some of the general areas around the hotel. Even the breakfast was rather dated, however after a heavy night on the beer it tasted good!
Ideal for a one-night stay if you are travelling through or attending a function. The hotel would also make a great setting for a scene from the UK drama ‘Life on Mars’ as its definitely reminiscent of the 1970’s.

“What a let down!”

Best Western Ardsley House Hotel

17 Jul 2007

I have stayed here twice - once in Nov 06 and just recently July 07.

Firstly, check your booking. I made an early reservation for a wedding and requested written confirmation. When it didn't arrive weeks later I called to find that Reservations had no record of my booking.

November 06 - If you book a double room - ask specifically for a decent sized double bed. We were allocated a bed that was like a large single. We did get moved to a proper double on request.

Swimming pool is quite nice. However, my husband went to use the jacuzzi, sat in it and my 6 yr old niece was about to join him, when a member of staff rushed out to say it was being cleaned. We discovered it was full of cleaning agents - we think Flash or alike! Hotel didn't want to know and passed us from pillar to post trying to liaise with the 'Leisure Club' who basically just said we'll put it in accident book. There was no signage re the cleaning, no cordon and no advice given when we entered - so beware. We are in the process of writing formally to the hotel.

July 07 - On our more recent trip we were allocated room 51 - on ground floor. The room smelt. It turned out they were the old smoking rooms in what is the newer extension section of the original House. I ended up requesting to be moved as over the course of 12 hours I found 5 black beetles in my room. I reported it to reception who told me pest control would come to look - no offer to move me. I requested a room change and was upgraded to a lovely room (112 in the old house - these rooms are much better). This was dealt with quite promptly but I was offered no proper apology - although I must add they gave me that first night accommodation free. I was happy with this result but not the hassle you want when you're on a break!

I was offered my first night free - however, they had left it on my bill when I went to leave. It wasn't until I queried it was this taken off.

This hotel could be so much nicer but unfortunately has not been maintained in some areas. The original house has some beautiful features and the rooms in that section appear newer and much better maintained. However, the ground floor wing by the leisure club were not so good and certainly needs a makeover.

My stay was for a wedding held at the hotel. The manager dealing with the meal was very organised and the food was good there.

Breakfast in the main restaurant was okay - one of those breakfasts that looks good but isn't overly tasty.

Ardsley House is easy to get to and convenient for my use so I would use again but just a shame every time I go there's always something not quite right! The Hotel has ample parking and lovely grounds at the rear.

“Old dated room, but good pool and excellent food in the restaurant”

Best Western Ardsley House Hotel

5 Jul 2006

First of all, no offence to Barnsley but this isn't a major city or a town of recognised scenic beauty and therefore I wasn't expecting a hotel room to compare to those I've stayed in in New York, London, Vienna, Milan etc.

My wife and I stayed in a suite (having been upgraded from an ordinary twin room). But what they call a suite is just a very large room with ensuite bathroom. The room was dated, had a view of a roof, and had one of the smallest beds I've seen in a hotel, accenuated by the vast empty space of the room. I don't even think it could be considered a full sized double, or at least it didn't feel as such. With room for more than one King sized bed, I couldn't understand this bizarre choice. Oh and creaky floors ... you could hear every move from the people above us.

The second bizarre choice was a small television on a tiny stand, so the centre of the TV was at knee height. Bizarre. We lifted it onto the table to improve our viewing. We were pleased that there were tea and coffee making facilities and complimentary biscuits.

The bathroom was old but functional.

The restaurant was large and the food was superb. We couldn't fault it and I've never had so much duck on my plate, and it was tender and lean. Great desert trolley - the food for us put a lot of expensive hotel restaurants to shame. We didn't try the Barnsley chop - it looked overpriced for what it was. Food on the Saturday night was accompanied with live music - one probably retired musician on synths providing programmed music he played along to, and two female vocalists, which enriched the atmosphere providing good family Northern entertainment. There were couples celebrating 50 years of marriage and other birthday celebrations, and whilst this wouldn't have worked in a major city, it was homely and very different to what we're used to. We liked it.

The big plus for me was the excellent pool and I'll always choose a hotel with a pool over one without.

I didn't know whether to give this a 3 or 4 star rating. The room was definitely a 3 or below rating, but the presence of a good pool, jacuzzi, small sauna and steam room elevate it above an average hotel not offering these facilities. I value a pool enormously being a keen swimmer, and whilst a little too chlorinated (especially the jacuzzi) for my liking, I was pleased to have this facility here.

Would we stay here again? Yes I think we might if we needed a hotel near Barnsley again, although I'd probably have a close look at what the others had to offer.

“#1 MOST DISGUSTING HOTEL IN THE HISTORY OF HOTELS!!!”

Best Western Ardsley House Hotel

13 Jul 2005

This hotel reminds me of a care home. It is very poorly decorated and smells of mould!

Our meal in the restauarant was foul. I am not sure as to how they think of charging for the mess which was on my plate but it was absolutely appalling!!!

I have to admit that after my 2 days "vacation" at this dump of a hotel I wanted to die.
