Went to Sonning on Thames for a wedding, the bride and groom being residents of the village. Unfortunately they had booked all of the rooms in the excellent Bull (the location of the reception). We decided to make a weekend of it, and to stay at the French Horn because of its 'reputation'. I booked a Junior Suite' well in advance. We arrived on the Friday afternoon. The receptionist was a bit flustered but was new to the job. She said that she needed to know if we would want to eat breakfast in the restaurant in advance as guests were encouraged to take breakfast in their rooms. We agreed to the latter - more on that later. We were shown to the room, which did have a fantastic view over the gardens down to the river. French doors led onto a veranda from both the bedroom and lounge area. Unfortunately the rooms were both circa 1970, the green draylon settee with accompanying cigarette burns had really seen better days and was in desperate need of replacement. The fitted wardrobes had clearly been there for a similar period and had a DIY feel. However we were there for the weekend and with the sun shining we overlooked the initial short comings. We ate in the restaurant that evening. It was quite busy and we were invited to wait on the terrace. We had booked for 8 o'clock - we waited there for about 45 minutes, by the time we were invited to our table we were both feeling chilled. However we had been entertained by the antics and performance of a rather loud and over the top front of house person. The food was adequate, although the cheese board brought us more mirth as the french waiter was less than inspired by its presentation and provenance, particularly the lack of anything from France! I will make no comment on the comings and goings of the waiting staff who were many but lacking direction. The worst part of the stay concerened the breakfast - we had made our choice the evening before, giving a 30 minute window for service. The breakfast we received on Saturday comprised 2 slices of bacon a sausage, egg, a few finely chopped mushrooms (presented in a manner that my wife has never seen before) and a quarter (1/4) of a tomato. This was accompanied by three half slices of 'flabby', white cold toast. The coffee was tasteless. The downside of this situation is having no-one to complain to - the cooking undertaken by house keeping staff from a small kitchen on the first floor. The rest of the day and evening was joyful - a fantastic wedding accompanied by amazing weather. Unfortunately we came back down to earth with Sunday breakfast which was even worse than Saturday. This time the bacon was the flabbiest I have ever encountered, the chopped mushrooms were missing, althoughthe quarter of a tomato made it to the plate. As we left we could not miss a recommendation from Michael Winner, displayed on the stairway. It was Michael's best place to eat outside of London. Unfortumnately it was dated May 1999! Check out was painful, the person on the reception being unable to grasp our breakfast issues. I apologise for this lengthy report but it really was not good. We will not be returning. Has Michael?
