Had seen this hotel some years and thought it would be a nice place to stay. Maybe it was then, but we were so disappointed. Very dated, reception area, staircase etc awful, 1970s decor, lots of plastic flowers everywhere.
Booked (and paid for!) a 'superior' room, which left much to be desired even as a standard. An assortment of unmatched furniture, tacky pictures, poor lighting, mismatched lamps, ripped bed valance. There was a nasty smell much of the time, inside cupboards were smelly and damp. An assortment of old bent coathangers. A small room off for a third person (seems some of the adult guests were sleeping 3 to a room). That room had an old bed with no bedhead so that anyone sleeping would have a head against a hard towel rail or the window.
There were 2 coach parties in. The dining room was therefore very cramped. I had to move my chair when eating to allow waiting staff and other guests to pass. Dinner was very regimented with an expectation that you would be there at 7 so that all were served together. Dining room also dated. The menu sounded OK but in reality because of the numbers the food was cooked and served like a canteen. Service was amateurish and unprofessional. The serving of coffee afterwards in the bar was like a scrum. Definitely not the 'romantic atmosphere' advertised!
2 lounges are pleasant and quiet, the third smells badly. The grounds are full of (local) parking of cars and boats. What is advertised and what is delivered are 2 very different things. We were glad to leave after our 4 days, although found the area full of interest. A pity as it could be great place, but has not kept up with the times and needs much modernisation and proper management.
