We recently spent an idyllic week on Lord Howe Island to celebrate my husband's Birthday - at the end of the week we did not want to leave and are talking about making this an annual holiday spot!!
Blue Lagoon Lodge is ideally located very close to the tiny CBD of Lord Howe and within a very short walk to the beautiful Lagoon beach and about a 10 minute walk to Neds Beach on the other side of the island. The lodge hires push bikes and helmets at a reasonable rate and this is the main mode of transport on the island.
Blue Lagoon Lodge offers studio apartments as well as one and two bedroom apartments. Although this is one of the older established accommodation options on the island, the rooms have been recently renovated and sport a fresh coat of bright paint. We stayed in a studio apartment which was more spacious than I had imagined.
Each apartment has a small verandah at the front with a table and a couple of chairs. The sliding door leads into a kitchenette area with a small table and chairs. The cooking facilities are fairly limited and consist of a small electric frypan and microwave oven, along with an electric kettle and toaster. The other kitchen equipment is more than adequate. The bedroom area is quite spacious and the bed and pillows were comfortable. At the rear of the apartment is a dressing area with a good sized wardrobe, some drawers and shelves - plenty of space to unpack our week's worth of clothing. This leads into the bathroom which is a little on the small size, but the shower cubicle is roomy and there is plenty of hot water. There is a ceiling fan which keeps the apartment cool on humid days and the room is well lit with a very large skylight. Although the tap water is desalinated, there are plenty of freshwater taps along the front of the apartments and it was no problem to fill our kettle and water bottles from these taps.
The lodge is situated in lovely tropical gardens with hibiscus and frangipani trees and of course lots of the native kentia palms. There is a guest laundry ($2.00 per wash), a games room and small library and a tennis court across the road. Although the rooms are not serviced on a daily basis, the very friendly girls will check if you need clean towels and wipe out the bathroom and our sheets were changed once during our stay. There is a very strict recycling program on the island and notices are provided in the kitchen area telling you what to do with your rubbish - recycling bins are located near the laundry and all over the island.
Although there are more luxurious places to stay on Lord Howe Island, Blue Lagoon offered all that we needed in a very handy location and I would not hesitate to stay there again if we are lucky enough to revisit this paradise island.
