“Lots of character!”

Newport Spa and Whirlpool Suites

27 Aug 2008

Newport in the summer is very expensive - so this hotel was the cheapest thing we can find. That said - here's a list of pros and cons:
PROS
- It's not a chain and there's a lot of individuality, eccentricities and a family feel to it, almost like a B&B
- It's set off a main road and has a long driveway making it feel a bit secluded
- There was a free breakfast
- There's free champagne and a fun barbecue held on the property
- Room was pretty big and had a fridge/microwave
- Price and location were great and convenient

CONS
- Rooms are dated, even the renovated ones
- Breakfast was not that great
- Property is oddly decorated and has an old feel to it
- There was no closet in the room, bathroom was falling apart, lightbulb didn't work
- Tons of noise in hallways and light coming through windows (no curtains)
- Pool was freezing!

If you're not going to spend a lot of time in the room, the hotel was great. It was close to everything and most importantly it was affordable.

Would not stay here again. Friendly people but it more like a motel with very small corridors. When we checked in the toilet bowel needed to be cleaned, the room was an igloo but I must say the front desk did call to see if all was in order (very professional). Great beds!

I purchased a weekend in Newport through Wyndham resorts. I know that it was a promotional weekend for a timeshare but we were promised a 3 star hotel. Both my boyfriend and myself have traveled worldwide and knew what to expect. Also, we're "locals" to Newport so we had an idea of the location of the hotel prior to arriving. I still managed to drive past it because the sign is half covered by trees.

We got there and the two desk attendants were busy dealing with customer complaints. Also, the maintenance guys were talking about the bad job that was done by the group before this one. When I finally made it to the desk, I was given a room with no preference of smoking or floor. I inquired about the whirlpools that the hotel is named for and the woman laughed at me and said something about them being reserved fast. I double checked my reservation and it was supposed to be a whirlpool room. Couldn't do anything at that time since they were booked. After asking the type of room and being told I had a choice, we took a non smoking room. The woman behind the desk repeatedly reminded me that if we were caught smoking in the room there would be $100 charge.

We were given our keys and told about the breakfast, shuttle (good deal for $2 per person each way but pricey if traveling with a large group), free paper, cocktail reception and free BBQ on Saturday and then the woman disappeared to the back room. I started to walk away and realized we had no map to the room and nobody told us where it was. Maintenance guy was new and didn't know but did try helping by telling us that room 296 was on the second floor lol. He got the woman who originally helped us and she pointed to the stairs and said "left."

The halls are way too narrow, you can't fit two people through them if one is carrying anything. The light fixtures look like they're from the 60s. There is ONE ice machine for the entire hotel. It's on the first floor, down a back hall and behind an employee room. It was nowhere near our room that was way in the back. I brought the empty bucket with me when I went out so I could get ice on the way back so we wouldn't have to hike it again.

The first thing we noticed about the room was the smell. I can't describe it but it wasn't pleasant. We got used to it after a min or two though. However looking around, I found myself wondering just what made it a 3 star hotel. Traveling cross country many times a year, I have stayed in everything from economy chains to luxury boutique hotels and this reminded me of someplace I'd pay $50 for while driving on I-80. It had the same bedspreads and blankets as the Super 8 I've stayed at many times and the furniture was severely worn. Supposedly the place was updated in 2006 but I didn't see where the updates were made.

There was a plastered patch in the fiberglass shower wall. It looked awful. The shades on the lamps between the beds were stained red and ripped. The nightstand was so water damaged that I couldn't put anything on it or it slid off because it was sloped. Same goes for the armoire/tv stand. Everything we placed on it slid and bounced off the TV in the center. There is no vent in the bathroom so it got REALLY steamy and you had to leave the door open. The noise the shower made was HORRID! I could almost not shower due to the squeal. You could hear everything in all the rooms. There is no noise insulation. I'm just hoping the kids in the room next to us didn't ask their parents about the screams of passion coming from a room 6 doors down. The toiletries are generic. I've stayed at economy chains where you at least get a brand name. Our view was of the home depot parking lot and the construction company behind the hotel.

On the plus side, the mattresses were TempurPedic. That as a nice touch since I'm used to memory foam from my home bed. There were a few massage chairs that seemed nice. Breakfast included the basics of a continental and then fresh waffles and chilled hard boiled eggs. The pool was open till 11pm, later than most.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel and I would never stay there again.

If you're looking for a Hyatt Regency--this is not the place to stay--but if you want a sort of Holiday Inn level but NOT the feeling of a chain this place is great. We stayed here with my husband, daughter and son and law and two grand-daughters (12 & 10) and a one year old grandson. Things we loved: the free breakfast was great with fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs and a waffle iron that the girls loved to use. They had two gyms and a pool --one of the gyms had a huge ball that the baby loved. The mornings were spent leisurely just using the facilities. The microwave and frig allowed us to have a big lunch during the day and then eat left overs at night--a real money saver. They had little extras like free cocktails on friday night and free BBQ on Sunday. They also had these great massage chairs in the lobby and in the breakfast room that had a big TV set and about 6 of these chairs. You just can't find an "individual" type of place like that any more. Even though it was located in a sort of commercial area; it was set back among trees so you felt pretty isolated. It was very quiet and restful. And it was only 10 minutes drive into Newport, you could also catch a bus right into down and I understand they have a shuttle on the weekends but we didn't use it.
This place is NOT for a fussy person. I know some people who would hate it as if you just get the regular rooms they are older and can certainly use new rugs and and remodelling. But I certainly didn't experience any smell or uncleanliness like some of the reviews. Also the rooms were well ventilated and you didn't have to use some sort of annoying loud air-conditioner.I understand that the rooms with jacuzzis have been remodeled. Both my husband and I agreed it was one of the best places we had ever stayed!

I booked my stay here online and went through Travelocity. The photos of the room showed bright rooms, wrought iron beds and crisp white...well, everything! It said there was a spa in the hotel and it even showed complimentary red wine on one of the bedside tables. Internet access was also listed as an amenity. The room I requested was a 'two level deluxe double queen'.

I pulled up to the hotel and actually smelled it before I even walked in. The onsite 'spa' is only a hair salon that makes the entire waiting room smell of a perm and a massage chair in the corner of a hallway.

The staff was actually quite friendly, but they were cleaning rooms as people checked in, because 'why do it if you don't need to' one of them said. I went up an elevator that had not been inspected since Jan 2005 (scary) and came out by the hair salon. I grumbled about my room smelling like a perm all night, but them walked through the door that separates the room and spas. I, LITERALLY, started to gag. It was a combination of mold and what smelled like animal carcasses that must have died in the walls. I wanted to turn around then, but my sister told me to be brave, as there was a man painting in the hallway and that should improve the smell.
Our room was an absolute dive. Broken furniture, tacky pastel/water color bed covers that had large stains on them. The bathroom had wallpaper peeling off which showed the water damage and mold underneath. It wreaked of hot, dead animal, mold and now paint.
The front office had never heard of 'this WiFi stuff'. We checked out early, and I have still not received the promised refund.
For the rest of our trip we were hanging our clothes out trying to rid them of the stink.
