The Rhett House Inn is a truly stunning property, but our stay was more memorable for the negatives we experienced than the positives.
First, we had booked our room of choice more than 2 months in advance, but when we arrived we were told we were given an "upgrade". The so-called upgrade was a decent room, but nothing special -- and it was missing the soaking tub that had prompted us to select our original choice. We asked the front desk to put us in the room we'd reserved, but were told that it was already given to other guests. When we expressed disappointment that they did not ask us if the room switch was alright with us, we were told that in fact, the room we wanted was not clean and that there was no housekeeper to prepare it for us. We didn't appreciate the deceitful nature of this, and ultimately were placed in another room that did not have the fireplace we'd paid for, but did have the soaking tub. So, we were happy for the time being.
The second major disappointment was that, although the room had a lovely soaking tub, there was never enough hot water over the course of our 2-night stay to fill the tub. It seems the Inn upgraded to the bigger tubs, but neglected to also upgrade to a bigger hot water heater.
The breakfasts were good, but vegetarians would be advised that the wait staff does not necessarily know what is in the dishes they are serving. My husband ordered the special of the day and specifically asked if there was meat in it. The waitress looked confused and stated that it contained beans, but no meat. When his meal came out, he took a big bite only to find that it was made with a meat-loaded chili con carne. Since there were people lining up to be seated, we opted to skip the breakfast there and go out to a restaurant so he could eat.
When we checked out, we told the innkeeper that we were really disappointed in our stay and mentioned the things that had gone wrong. She apologized and said the manager would follow up with us, but that was 6 weeks ago and we've never heard back from them. This was the most expensive place we've ever stayed ($499 for the weekend) and it was just not nearly as nice as other places we've stayed for much less. It certainly didn't meet our expectations of what a 4-star inn would be like.
