While this is not the nicest Fairfield Inn I've ever been to it's far from the worst. In fact, it was fine.
First of all, I saw no evidence of stained carpeting or a need for renovation, as others mentioned. The hotel looked to be in good condition. Perhaps action was taken based on those reviews.
Check-in was painless, as it generally is at Marriott properties. Since the hotel was largely empty, and I'm a Marriott Rewards member, I was a bit surprised to be given the room next to the elevator. But it was quiet enough, so I didn't see a need to change. The room was well maintained.
Breakfast was ample, but, like at most places, you'll be tired of it after two days. The breakfast room was kept clean. It's small, though, so if it's busy I could envision a seating problem.
The wireless Internet in the room was easy to connect to and very fast. There's a PC with a printer in the lobby, which was handy for a boarding pass.
Ice and soda are only on the 1st floor, which is a bit of a hassle.
But there's a coin washer and dryer on the 2nd floor, which was handy.
You'll have to drive to eat, but nothing is far (try The Greek Table in Bluffton, next to Publix). Hilton Head Island is about 30 minutes.
One word of caution: The hotel is in a development where construction continues. I was up and out early, but late sleepers might get a rude interruption.
