“Rude Inn Keeper”

John Rutledge House Inn

I just returned from Charleston where we spent Sisters Weekend. The Inn was cute and historic. The hotel staff was helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was nice too. However, we were shocked at the rudeness of the Inn Keeper.
Upon our arrival the Inn Keeper came to our door and very rudely confronted us about booking through Expedia. Our reservation defaulted to 1 guest (rather than 3), since we had 1 plane ticket. She told us we were responsible for paying for $150 extra to cover the cost of the other 2 guests. After looking into it on the hotels website) we found that their rates are to include 2 guests, so we confronted her and ended up paying extra for a 3rd guest. Regardless, she was so rude and seemed to talk down to us (we figured it was because we were three younger girls). She could have given us the same information in a nice and kind way.
She never came back to check on us, or see how our stay was.
Then to top everything off- we were in the main house (Room 2), and had a ton of traffic by our window, also workers stood outside our window on their breaks and would talk quite loud.
The shower was either scolding hot or freezing cold. I never took a nice shower-- always rushed in and out . I was disappointed that we had to carry all of our luggage to and from the cars, especially going up and down a bunch of stairs. Next time I visit Charleston I will find a new place to stay.

We stayed at the historically significant John Rutledge House Inn during our first visit through the south and were pleased with the accommodations and location. We had a huge room in the main house and our friends had a lovely room in the Carriage House. Breakfast was delicious and we had a choice of having it served upstairs in the beautiful (former) ballroom, outdoors on the patio or in our room. The helpful staff made dinner reservations for us and provided info on sightseeing. Charleston was a lovely city--we hope to return and would stay at the Rutledge House again. “Superb experience at Rutledge House Inn”

After days of research and seeing several possibilities in Charleston, I chose the Rutledge House Inn for a short girls' weekend/birthday celebration. The entire experience surpassed my expectations. The inn itself is graceful and charming. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, assisting us with restaurant recommendation/reservations and various tours, and surprising me with a bottle of champagne in my room on my BD. The included breakfast was wonderful - a delicious main dish which changed each day, or your pick from a list of breakfast mainstays - delivered either to your room, the outdoor patio, or the main ballroom. The afternoon tea was a lovely break after walking around Charleston all day. The location was ideal - within walking distance of everything, and yet not in the heart of all the congestion and noise. I will return to this inn each time I go to Charleston.

“Southern Charm?”

John Rutledge House Inn

28 May 2008

My wife and I recently stayed at the John Rutledge House Inn, and really enjoyed the city of Charleston. We stayed in the carriage house and thought the housekeeper did a great job cleaning our room. The two best assets to the inn were two of the concierge's: Katie and Whitney. They were unbelievably courteous, knowledgeable, professional, and a delight to be around.
Katie's attention to detail and honesty about certain places to see or not to see was a welcome sight and Whitney was also very helpful with dinner reservations. They helped make our trip.
We have to say when we met the innkeeper, however, we were far from impressed. She seemed nice enough to the guests, but you could tell instantly that she was not from Charleston. My wife overheard her talking to several of her employees at different occassions and could not believe how she talked down to them. She was always sighing in frustration and then whenever she was around us, would put on this happy act. Someone should have a word with her about that. The employees, in our opinion, should not have been treated in such a manner.
Elizabeth was very professional and kind, and so was Maurice.
Liked the Inn enough, but when it came to the innkeeper, it lacked that southern charm.

OK, but definitely not a four- star Inn as AAA claims. Lots of stairs, well worn, good location, great mattress, and good parking. Victoria was extremely nice and helpful! The breakfast was good and Maurice was very attentive. Interesting stay but probably would not go back. Needs some tender loving care.
