I am just floored by some of the less than positive reviews of Poogan's Porch.
Our experience was completely positive and wonderful. I know that some say there are better places to eat in Charleston, and that may be true, but Poogan's is awesome!
We started off with mint julep cocktails which were quite well done although not up to par with what you get at the Kentucky Derby, but still quite nice.
I had the fried green tomato appetizer and it was truly just about the best appetizer I've ever had, definitely in the top five. The tomatoes are encrusted with pecans, and comes along with goat cheese rolled in pecans with an accompaniment of peaches. I could have quit right there it was so good.
My husband had the she-crab soup, which he tells me was excellent. For the entree I had the pork tenderloin with chipotle barbecue sauce. It came with mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus. It was excellent and I ate every bit of it. The meat was tender and the sauce was very savory and obviously made with care. My husband had the pork chop with country ham and sun-dried tomato gravy. He cleaned his plate as well.
For dessert, we shared a slice of key lime pie. It was very tasty, not overly tart, but a texture that we are not used to. However, it was good and we enjoyed it.
WAIT! I almost forgot the biscuits! Geeez. The biscuits are definitely something to write home about. They are THE BEST and I even had to rate them just a tad higher than my grandmother's. The biscuits came hot from the oven, we had to wait for them, and boy was it worth it! Those biscuits are one of the best uses of flour that I've ever experienced. I was not too proud to ask for more, and I took them with me.
Our waitress was attentive and took good care of us.
If I had to mention a downside, I would say that there was an odd smell in the dining room we were in. Not sure what it was, almost smelled moldy or musty - maybe old house smell. And the floor seemed a bit greasy to me. I don't know, maybe they spilled something and it got tracked through the dining room.
When the weather is good you can actually dine on the front porch and that looked to be enjoyable.
This is only the 2nd time I've given a 5 rating, and I stand by that. It was an excellent dining experience and I would definitely return!
