Here is the following email I sent to the Hotel Manager after the stay my mother and I had in September 2007:

"Hi, Jerry!
I just wanted to take a minute to tell you what a wonderful time my mother and I had at Beach Walk Hotel, September 6-10th this year. This was my 2nd stay and her first and we loved it! The breakfast is always great, the walk to the beach was perfect and scenic, the room was always clean, the view overlooking your gardens was very pretty (especially going out to the gazebo to see the turtles and look for that Gator!), the pool was clean and refreshing in the afternoons after being at the beach all day, etc, etc, etc….! Thank you for taking care of our reservation confirmation before arriving and for running a great property! We hope to make it an annual September trip! See you next year and keep up the good work!"

This is really the only place on Hilton Head you can stay that is not over crowded, over priced or too far from the beach to walk. If you walk the side street from the timeshare property behind Beach Walk down to the beach instead of the busy hwy, the walk is shaded and very scenic AND passes all the shops at Coligny and restaurants that serve good fresh seafood! So you can grab some sun block on the way down and late lunch on the way back to the room! The pool was perfect and in September, there was barely anyone around so we had most of the pool to ourselves in the mid to late afternoon. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who has the money to vacation on Hilton Head but doesn't feel like they need to pay over $200 a night or be right on top of the beach or the crowds to have a nice time. I am 37, professional, married with no children and took my mother on vacation for the first time ever - so this trip was important to me. Just to note, I am a VERY picky traveler and always feel like I should be accommodated. Beach Walk did that and more without even trying. Thanks again, Jerry!

We stayed at the Beachwalk Motel for a long weekend in October 2007. It was okay. It looks like they have put new carpet, curtains, shower curtain rod, chair coverings, etc. in an older motel. The beds were decent, but not super comfortable. It's almost like they put too much furniture in the room so it seems kind of small. The people at the motel were nice enough. It was very busy while we stayed there.

They do have a golf cart shuttle that will take you just about anywhere around the area. The beach is only about a 10 minute walk, but you do have to cut through a shopping center. The shopping center is a little confusing because it winds around all over the place.

The other reviewers are right that there is not a whole lot of street lights on the island and all of the shopping areas are hidden in the trees. It's a little claustrophobic to drive around, but some people like the idea that HHI is not commercial at all.

First, let me say that my family usually vacations in Destin, Florida or Jekyll Island, Georgia. We choose Destin when we want to enjoy beautiful beaches and Jekyll Island when we want to enjoy a secluded island with no traffic or McDonalds. We decided to try Hilton Head Island for a short trip in August. We will never be back.
Our horrible experience of Hilton Head Island started before we even left the house. I looked for hotels on the internet, and found that the less expensive hotels on the beach were $300. This was suprising, after staying in extremely nice beachside condos in Destin, Florida for only around $150 per night. We decided to suck it up and drive 5 hours from Columbus, Georgia, despite the cost.
Once we entered South Carolina, we decided to follow a sign that said "Hilton Head Island 21 miles". We kept following the signs that said "Hilton Head Island 21 miles" for about 40 miles. Finally we returned to our map and found the island, despite the signs.
Once we entered the island, we found Atlanta traffic in a smaller-than Atlanta area. It was impossible to drive. Huge trees cover restraunt and hotel signs, and every building looks the same. We enjoy reading reviews and looking at the actual restaraunt before choosing to eat there. That is impossible to do on HHI, thanks to the large trees that try to make the island look secluded by covering up McDonalds.
We finally found our hotel, the Beachwalk Hotel. In the lobby, we were harrassed by a sales person clothed in "Guest services" clothing. Our room was okay, which we weren't dissapointed since this was a short spur of the moment trip, we didn't have high expectations...we just wanted to enjoy the beach and good food.
For lunch, we ate at Captain Woody's. This was a very lunch place. We returned to our hotel and asked the lobby clerk where the beach was. He gave us horrible directions, telling us we would walk on a "nature trail to the beach". The nature trail turned out to be an ally way, which smelled of garbage.
The beach was nice. It was overcrowded, but nice. Again, Destin Florida and Jekyll Island beaches are prettier and less crowded.
At night we ate at Kingfisher. The food was good, but the service was horrible.
We came back to the hotel and decided to go to the beach at night. After wading through a overcrowded "fair like atmosphere" of overly priced stores and screaming bratty children, we arrived at the beach. We were scared of getting mugged, because there was no lighting outside of the "fair".
The beach was so nice at night. It wasn't crowded at all. The walk home consisted of avoiding drunk, loud teenagers. I fell down in the unlit "nature walk", because I couldn't see anything. I almost sprained my ankle, so we decided that we were finished with HHI. We were so ready to get out that we checked out of the hotel (with no refund) and drove 5 hours home at 10 pm.
Don't go here. It isn't worth the money. Overcrowded, Overcrowded, Overcrowded!

While Hilton Head Island prides itself on it's natural environment, for many travelers it is a hinderence when trying to find a particular location. We, at the Beachwalk Hotel, try our best to give accurate directions to our guests, in the hope that they will enjoy our close location to the best that Hilton Head has to offer. It is unfortunate that all establishments on Hilton Head do not have the high standards that we do, we appreciate any and all comments to help improve our customer service.

“Disappointed in HH”

Regardless of the price I paid I was disappointed in the status of the room with "tired" linens and furniture, stained carpet, mold in the bathtub around the rim and a bed right out of the rock quarry. I would gladly pay more for a room that at least appeared clean. Priceline features the hotel as a 2 1/2 star and I would rate it a 1 star!

The plus for the hotel was that it is in a good location.

We stayed one night at the Beachwalk on 7/28. We got in around 11am and checked right in. Check in was not until 4pm but they did not make a fuss about it nor were we charged for an early check in fee. This was great cause we had a place to change for the beach. There is nothing fancy about the room. A little outdated but suficcient enough if it's just a place to sleep. Bathrooms are small. Walls are thin. The room was clean. Only thing we noticed was the carpet had a few stains in it. The room has a mini-fridge which was great if you wanted to keep drinks cold. One great thing for some travelers is that this hotel is pet friendly year round with no weight restrictions. There is a pet fee of $40 per stay. No restrictions on leaving your pet in the room unattended while you are not there.(Some other nicer hotels on the island charge a pet fee and have weight restrictions along with some other restrictions such as you are not allowed to leave pets unattended or that they are only allowed during the off season.) We didn't use the pool but it looked clean. Continental breakfast was standard. Muffins, bagels, waffle irons, cereal, etc. The beach is about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach. The hotel also offers a complimentary golf cart shuttle that can take you to the beach or coligny plaza and some other stops along the way. We brought our bikes with us and that was very convenient. Bike ride to the beach is about 5 minutes. You cut through the arbor in the parking lot and through coligny plaza. This is basically a straight shot right to the beach. This was our first time at this hotel and we found the beach on our bikes in less than 10 minutes without asking for directions. If you do not own a bike, I recommend you rent one. There is a bike rental shop right next to the hotel through the parking in the next shopping center. Bikes are a great way to travel around this area with coligny plaza so close. There are bike racks and bike lanes everywhere. We talked to some other vacationers who mentioned that it was hard to find parking spaces at the beach and restuarants since they drove. I recommend getting up at 6am and hopping on your bike to the beach for the gorgeous sunrise around 6:30am. Absolutely breathtaking and so worth it. Beach is not crowed at this time. You'll see alot of people with the same idea along with morning joggers and dog walkers. We even saw dolphins. Another great thing is you can ride your bikes on the beach anytime during the day.
