First, let me say that my family usually vacations in Destin, Florida or Jekyll Island, Georgia. We choose Destin when we want to enjoy beautiful beaches and Jekyll Island when we want to enjoy a secluded island with no traffic or McDonalds. We decided to try Hilton Head Island for a short trip in August. We will never be back.
Our horrible experience of Hilton Head Island started before we even left the house. I looked for hotels on the internet, and found that the less expensive hotels on the beach were $300. This was suprising, after staying in extremely nice beachside condos in Destin, Florida for only around $150 per night. We decided to suck it up and drive 5 hours from Columbus, Georgia, despite the cost.
Once we entered South Carolina, we decided to follow a sign that said "Hilton Head Island 21 miles". We kept following the signs that said "Hilton Head Island 21 miles" for about 40 miles. Finally we returned to our map and found the island, despite the signs.
Once we entered the island, we found Atlanta traffic in a smaller-than Atlanta area. It was impossible to drive. Huge trees cover restraunt and hotel signs, and every building looks the same. We enjoy reading reviews and looking at the actual restaraunt before choosing to eat there. That is impossible to do on HHI, thanks to the large trees that try to make the island look secluded by covering up McDonalds.
We finally found our hotel, the Beachwalk Hotel. In the lobby, we were harrassed by a sales person clothed in "Guest services" clothing. Our room was okay, which we weren't dissapointed since this was a short spur of the moment trip, we didn't have high expectations...we just wanted to enjoy the beach and good food.
For lunch, we ate at Captain Woody's. This was a very lunch place. We returned to our hotel and asked the lobby clerk where the beach was. He gave us horrible directions, telling us we would walk on a "nature trail to the beach". The nature trail turned out to be an ally way, which smelled of garbage.
The beach was nice. It was overcrowded, but nice. Again, Destin Florida and Jekyll Island beaches are prettier and less crowded.
At night we ate at Kingfisher. The food was good, but the service was horrible.
We came back to the hotel and decided to go to the beach at night. After wading through a overcrowded "fair like atmosphere" of overly priced stores and screaming bratty children, we arrived at the beach. We were scared of getting mugged, because there was no lighting outside of the "fair".
The beach was so nice at night. It wasn't crowded at all. The walk home consisted of avoiding drunk, loud teenagers. I fell down in the unlit "nature walk", because I couldn't see anything. I almost sprained my ankle, so we decided that we were finished with HHI. We were so ready to get out that we checked out of the hotel (with no refund) and drove 5 hours home at 10 pm.
Don't go here. It isn't worth the money. Overcrowded, Overcrowded, Overcrowded!

While Hilton Head Island prides itself on it's natural environment, for many travelers it is a hinderence when trying to find a particular location. We, at the Beachwalk Hotel, try our best to give accurate directions to our guests, in the hope that they will enjoy our close location to the best that Hilton Head has to offer. It is unfortunate that all establishments on Hilton Head do not have the high standards that we do, we appreciate any and all comments to help improve our customer service.
