I don't have much negative to say about this place although I do think it may be a tiny bit overrated, currently #4 on tripadvisor's list of places to stay here in Hilton Head. I'm not saying to avoid it, I haven't stayed elsewhere but I believe #4 may be a tad bit high.
I booked this place because my wife wanted quick/easy beach access, in addition to nice pools. Other places I looked at that were ranked highly either were already booked or had a few bad reviews. I didn't read a single bad review on this place but I didn't feel it was deserving of 5/5 having stayed here either.
Marriott Grand Ocean is a well kept, clean property. There are numerous pools and the pool bar is definitely a plus, although I did feel we were a little bit oversold on "pool bar Jim's". It was an OK pool bar, but we were told by people we met in the lobby it was "not to be missed". I can't say it was really unique in any regard. It was OK but it was not really unique in any way aside from being named after a guy who works there and selling a few things with his name on them. I suppose it felt a bit like a mega resort trying to lose the "mega resort" feel, and it didn't quite pass as far as I was concerned. Not saying it was a waste of time, just didn't quite live up to the billing when we were told "you HAVE to go here".
We paid a pretty penny to stay here. I won't say exactly how much but it was a lot. It was just my wife and I. I knew up front we were renting a two bedroom place with a kitchen and that was part of the reason it cost so much. I did it anyway because I thought it was what my wife would want. Our room was nice, not "uber modern" but plenty nice and I can't say it was a disappointment in any way.
I suppose if I had to find a complaint it would be the fact that we were "renters" and this place did have a certain timeshare feel to it. From my internet research on Hilton Head it seemed that a lot of places were that way. But on our first day here, in my first trip to the bar, when the first person who went out of their way to chat with us made a point to tell me she was an "owner" and ask me if I was "just renting", well I guess that gave me a vibe I didn't really want to have on my vacation.
I personally believe timeshares are a ripoff and a gimmick. I didn't bother to engage her in that discussion and I won't go into details here. But it wasn't the way to start my trip I guess you could say. I'll just leave it at that. I did read many reviews here from "owners" and that should have been a cue for me that this wasn't necessarily the place for us. It didn't spoil my entire trip by any means, but it was not what I was going for either.
I will give the facility a lot of credit because not one person who works here pushed the timeshare thing on me. There were signs in elevators to learn more about it but not one employee brought it up. This is a good thing because for what we paid for a room, had someone given us a sales pitch, I would have been very unhappy to say the least.
This resort is clean and very well kept. The staff was professional and courteous. If you have a large group and are OK with the "timeshare" vibe, this is probably a good option. But if your party is just two, and you are just "renting", well I'd look around a little bit before I booked here---particularly if the only space available is two separate bedrooms and sleeps six or more........
