“Worst Marriott Timeshare in Hilton Head, but still I would go back”

My wife and I stayed at Harbour Pointe in September 2007 after my parents gave us their timeshare week and we traded last minute into this Hilton Head property. We knew ahead of time that this wasn't the best Marriott timeshare property in Hilton Head so we had a realistic expectation going in. Check in went fine but the worst part of our room was that it was right above the laundry facility. We're not big complainers but we did check to see if there was another room available which there wasn't. It wasn't that big a problem but we did hear the staff talking as they worked pretty much every morning around 10:00, but we were awake anyway so it wasn't that big of a deal. The other complaint was that the wireless internet didn't work in our room. I called the help number and was told that the routers are in every other room and that sometimes depending on your rooms location it might not be that strong of a signal, so as a result I could never get online from our room and had to go downstairs to the lobby to connect.

The room had been recently redone and all of the decorating was nice and fresh. The pool isn't the biggest or nicest but my wife and my's favorite thing to do was to turn our lounge chairs around and face out over the marsh which was fantastic. The property provides a quick shuttle bus to the beach which was always fast and clean and we also used the tennis courts twice and they were nice and clean as well.

So we don't really have any major complaints about the property but knowing how nice the other Marriott properties are in Hilton Head I would much prefer to stay at one of the others, but if I got another week at Harbour Pointe given to me I wouldn't complain and would take it happily. Hilton Head is nice and my wife and i enjoyed Old Fort Pub as our favorite restaurant there.

This is a great timeshare- condo-hotel. Some guests were owners, others traded from other properties and some were renters. The complex has two pools and overlooks great views of marshland. Shopping & dining are within walking distance & a convenient free shuttle bus runs beween the property, the beach and adjacent retail/dining options. The rooms are all 2 bedrooms/2 bath/ 2 balconies. We had 18 people for dinner one night & cooked out on the poolside grill. All the staff were extremely nice and helpful. The rooms were gorgeous-- and I saw no mold in the units-.This is a great place at about "mid-island".

From the momement we entered the lobby the overwhelming smell of mold was so bad it was hard to even check in. The first room they gave us was directly above the lobby. We couldn't stay in that room because it was so bad. The staff was extremely accomodating and very nice. They agreed that they had a mold problem so they took us to another room. The smell wasn't bad so we settled in for the night. In the morning we noticed mold growing on the walls of the bathroom and on the bathroom cabinets. We were shocked that this was rated a 5 star by interval and we always stay at Marriotts and never encountered anything like this.

The manager apologized, they tried to clean it and we tried to stay another night. Untill my husband noticed mold growing out of the hallway vent. Again, we were switched to another room. This room also had mold but not as much. At 10:00 pm while getting our 3 children to bed we saw 3 roaches/water bugs in the kitchen. We packed up and checked out. I'm not sure if this problem has been solved, but they told us that it was a problem that couldn't be fixed.

I don't want anyone to experience what we did. I still think about it and its been two years. Please check with staff about the mold problem befor you go!

Good luck!

“Was pleasantly surprised Loved the Resort!”

My family and I are just completing a wonderful week at the Marriott Sunset Pointe Resort on Hilton Head Island, SC. We had read many reviews (mostly negative) and were fearful of what we would find. But to our surprise we found none of the problems that we were warned about. The first thing we noticed on our arrival was how clean the property was. At check in we were given all the information we could possibly want or need about the resort and the Island for a 7 day stay. I ran upstairs to scout out our villa and was estatic to find a beautiful, well decorated apartment that overlooked one of the pools and the harbor. The bathrooms and kitchen were spotless and the place smelled fresh. Our pots, pans, dishes, silverware and small appliances appeared to be brand new. Our bed linens were up to the crisp Marriott standards that I was hoping for. The balcony which contained a table and four chairs turned out to be one of our favorite spots for morning breakfast and evening drinks. There were multiple stainless steel gas grills which were well used by anyone desirous and a lovely oversized gazebo with tables, chairs and an irrestible giant size chess board and 2' tall chess pieces. We rented bikes (six new ones, I might add) right on the property for an unbelievably low price of $25 a piece for a week. In addition there are tennis courts, shuffleboard, a game area and movie rentals. I stopped by the desk to have the concierge make a dinner reservation for us at a restaurant that generally doesn't take reservations (except through the concierge) only to find out that this very helpful and gracious employee was the manager Case Spencer. Everyone I dealt with at the front desk went out of their way to make our stay delightful (especially an employee by the name of John) and it really was. We have stayed at many timeshare properties inside the US and out and I found this one to be very satisfactory. I think the fact that this resort is one of the smaller properties makes it a little more home-y. I did wish they had a larger grocery store area. We were totally pleased and given the opportunity we will book here again.

“Great Vacation! Loved Marriott at Harbour/Sunset Point, HHI”

Whatever you've read about Marriott's Harbour Point being older or a smoking only resort - put that out of your mind. The rooms have all been completely refurbished, and upon arrival, one must sign a statement promising not to smoke. There was no hint of smoke in our accommodations. Beginning June 9, 2007, we were traveling with myself, my husband, our three teenaged sons, and my husband's sister. Harbour Point is located in Shelter Cove, an area which offers shopping, dining, outdoor entertainment (primarily the famed Shannon Tanner of HHI), and great views. We were located in Building 4 (Osprey Building) and had a fabulous view overlooking the harbor. We lucked out with the weather, as the entire week stayed in the 80's with a wonderful breeze. Upon entry into our unit (#310), there was a very well-appointed kitchen to our right with a washer/dryer, then a dining area, and then a living area with lots of storage (which is great, as we had lots of stuff!). Beyond that, there was a nice, albeit a bit small, patio with a great view of the harbor. The unit contained a good sized master bedroom suite, with a king-sized bed, 2 good-sized closets, and a jacuzzi tub and separate shower room. The second bedroom contained two single beds, and there was a typical bathroom in the hall. Everything was decorated very nicely, in neutrals, and the bed linens were extremely comfortable. The unit provided both plenty of bath linens and pool towels. The complex itself provided two pools (one heated, although this was unnecessary in June in SC), and one more secluded, unheated pool. There were plenty of gas grills and picnic tables, along with several attractive gazebos. There was a well-placed porch-type swing placed to overlook the harbor. This was lovely on Tuesday night, when fireworks are set off from a barge in the harbor. Another great amenity was that, although Harbour Point/Sunset Point is not located on the beach, a very handy and on-time (not to mention air-conditioned) shuttle service operates from 0800 hours to 2100 hours daily. The shuttle always arrived within mere minutes of our call, and provided door to door (or door to beach) service, and we were blessed with friendly, helpful drivers. Other features included a well-appointed fitness center, a ping-pong/game room, and a helpful staff. When our kitchen sink clogged, a quick call to the front desk quickly yielded a repairman, so no worries. While we were on HHI, we kayaked, jetskiied, played tennis on site, dined on great seafood, spent several days at the lovely beach (the beach drop off point is at Palmetto Dunes).

If you are thinking of a vacation at Marriott's Harbour Point/Sunset Point, do not hesitate. We had a fabulous time. If you have any specific questions for us, please do not hesitate to post them on the Hilton Head Island forum with "IrishEyes" in the subject line.

Happy travels!
