All 8 of us in my group loved the dolphin tour, especially my 2.5-year-old son, who asked to see dolphins again every single day for the rest of our trip.
Blue Wave promises a 90% chance of seeing dolphins, but whether they'll be in a frisky mood and come out of the water is completely luck of the draw. We saw many, many dolphins on our tour (at 9:30 a.m.), but mostly we saw dorsal fins swimming through the water. A couple of times we were lucky and saw one leap out of the water, which made the whole trip worth it. Plus it was a gorgeous boat ride in and around beautiful Murrells Inlet.
The boat looked a bit scary and small at first, but we all fit pretty comfortably and it was a calm ride. My mom (69 years old) was terrified climbing on and off but seemed fine during the tour. And Captain Mark clearly has a real love for dolphins and shared some truly interesting facts (without being one of those annoying tour guides who blabs on and on and on).
A FEW TIPS:
• Arrive 30 minutes before your boat leaves to sign paperwork, hear a safety briefing, and get settled in on the boat.
• Go to the bathroom before you leave, as there are no facilities on board.
• Wear a snug-fitting hat and sunscreen and tie up your hair, as almost all seating is in full sunlight and it gets windy.
• We overheard an employee say the morning tours are "always better," so try to book accordingly.
We will definitely do this tour again and hope for some friskier dolphins next time!
