This must be one of the cheapest places in the Charleston area, yet in most respects it was perfectly satisfactory and we would stay again should we visit Charleston. We saw several similar older motels closer to the downtown area that were likewise being nursed carefully along into the 21st Century but they were priced at double or more. And this location is actually not at all bad, being directly on interchanges for both I26 and I526--you can zoom down into the historic area in about ten minutes or over the rivers to East and West Suburban areas in similar time. (I had heard discouraging things about the parking downtown but here's a hot tip: two days running, we found free, fullday street parking where we would have least expected it, right down around the Battery and White Point Gardens. Left the car there all day and wandered about this wonderful old town. So our concerns about not staying right in downtown area were needless.)
Now because of this very adjacency to highways, you should certainly request a room facing the inner pool courtyard to minimize noise. Our room was clean, well-maintained and had clearly been repainted and freshened up very recently. Mattress was excellent, shower pressure like a fire hose--just the way I like it--TV large screen and good cable reception, small frig and microwave all in working order. As with most motels of this vintage, there was a persistent musty odor whenever the air conditioning was left running but at least during our stay, things were peaceful enough that we often left the door chained adjar for fresh air, something we would clearly NOT have done had any of the "drug dealers" mentioned by a previous Tripadvisor been anywhere in evidence. We felt no security concerns here.
We didn't use the pool ourselves but it looked clean and inviting and some hardier folks were out using it at this early season.
A particularly enjoyable feature here was the full breakfast buffet that is served every morning in a real dining room overlooking the pool courtyard. This costs $4.99 extra but is well worth the price and even folks not staying at the North Charleston Inn might consider dropping by for this breakfast deal. The breakfast staff were especially pleasant and accommodating and we appreciated that the buffet was kept stocked right until closing time and that even then, we weren't rushed out.
Most of the staff here were fine--a maintenance man even offered to help me carry out our luggage when we were leaving--but I felt that the front desk people could have shown a bit more warmth.
I do have one criticism to make. The North Charleston Inn needs to tighten up its billing practices. I had had to cancel a reservation here two years ago and even though I had made the cancellation directly with the hotel, I was charged for one night no show. This time round, there was a mysterious charge to my credit card made a month before our actual arrival. In both cases, management quickly and cheerfully corrected things, but this is clearly an unacceptable rate of "errors".
The North Charleston area, itself, doesn't usually make it into the tourist guides other than for its Convention Center or its major shopping malls but we did happen upon at least one noteworthy attraction, so noteworthy in fact that we went back a a second time. This is the Navy Yard area. While not as old or extensive as the famous "Truman Annex" naval quarters in Key West that all tourists there are advised to visit, this now-abandoned facility in North Charleston, dating back just over a century, is fully equal to that in Key West in beauty and interest, particularly if you are visiting in the Spring season. The truly spectacular buildings and lush landscaping are being meticulously kept up and developed under a public-private partnership, "Navy Yard at Noisette": be sure to see this.
