Visted Charleston with my two children ages 9, 13 over a four day (Thurs-Sunday) Spring Break and loved the area. Booked a 2bed/1bath Suite which had a kitchen, full Frig, Electric Stove Top/Sink with appliances, 2 TV unit and was very pleased with the accomodations. As others have noted very pretty new Building, plenty of free parking, wonderful breakfast included, heated outdoor swim pool with Basketball
Court which my son loved. This is a great location centrally located for 20 minuite easy access to downtown Historic Charleston, Mt Pleasant and other points of interest. It is across the street so to speak from the Tangier Outlet (but you can't see it) from the hotel, which had Coach, Liz Clabourne and other notable more upscale designer type stores in a clean outdoor promenade. There is also a Walmart Superstore in the same vicinity and many restuarants for food or eating out.
The highlights of our trip were as follows: Fort Sumnter Boat Trip with guided Park Ranger Historical Talk, Definately take your kids to Cypress Gardens about 20 minutes north to take the Guided Swamp Boat tour to see the Gators and Cypress Trees, Butterly House and Reptile/
Amphibian Exhibits were well done. Overall a pretty location, plan on spending about two hours there. If you have a car venture into Mt Pleasant to Highway 17 to "SweetGrass Highway" especially if you wish to buy one of the lovely SweetGrass baskets made by the ladies in the
Gulla tradition. Plan on spending about $100 + or more but the selection is greater and the same baskets will run you2-3times more in the Charleston Market. We took an extraordinary Tour with Mr Alphonso Brown of Gulla Tours who will take you on a 2 hour tour in his air conditioned van pointing out the history of the Gulla people, the history of Slavery, and notable points of African American history in Charleston. We visited the Philip Simons BlackSmith shop. He is famous for making many of the Gates in Charleston which will also be pointed out to you on the tour. Mr Brown will teach you about the Gulla language and its origins. This tour is a must for Educators,Students, or anyone who wants another perspective about the history of Charleston. His tour leaves across the street from the Tourist Center in downtown Charleston and I booked it through his website. I would recomend booking it in advance as we did as his tours were totally filled for the weekend we visited. We took a Friday 11:00AM tour. Regarding food, I have one 9 year old picky eater so I didn't have a chance to experience much of the Cuisine which Charleston is famous for. However, We all enjoyed the Ribs at Sticky Fingers on Meeting Street, and we found an excellent Pizzaria called NYPD Pizza in Mount Pleasant (we just happened upon it), the hand tossed brick oven pizza, and freshly made Calzones (I would recommend the Vegetarian one) with fresh marinara sauce would rival any Pizzaria in any large Urban area including NYC, Chicago, or Philly. They really know what they are doing. Lastly, the Airport in Charleston is really nice, you can walk right out to the lots where the rental cars are located. An easy Aiport to fly in and out of. We took a direct flight about 1.5 hours non-stop on US Airways from Philadelphia. Hope to visit again, April was trully a lovely time to visit the area.
