We just returned from Ireland and our favorite stay by far was Glin Castle. Arriving early on a wet and dreary afternoon, the staff immediately lit a fire in the drawing room for us and brought us tea. I had stayed at Glin Castle a few years ago while in Ireland on business and could not wait for my husband to experience the castle on his first trip to Ireland. And from that first sip of tea with delicious scones and pastries until our departure, we totally enjoyed our stay.
We had booked a superior room located on the 2nd floor (3rd to we Americans) because we don't mind the stairs and the view of the gardens and the Shannon is delightful. The room was extremely well thought out with every amenity including a large flat screen TV,DVD player, and a selection of soothing CDs.
Glin Castle grows on you. It is not a perfect Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton with not a thing out of place. It is unique. The Castle is the home of the Knight of Glin and his wife and they have been collectors for many years. You could spend days just admiring the paintings and treasures, not locked away but put out on display like the home that it is.
That said, the Castle is not a B & B. It is a beautifully run hotel. Bob Duff, the general manager, has been there many years and is always on hand to make sure that your stay is perfection.
We had a fabulous dinner in the candle-lit dining room which was filled with both Castle guests and locals who appreciate fine dining. And before leaving for our flight in the morning, we had a walk in the beautiful gardens and a wonderful breakfast.
Glin Castle was a perfect ending to a delightful trip to Ireland. I would reccommend it to anyone for a true taste of deluxe travel in Ireland,
