We have just returned from a weeks holiday at Devoncourt Holiday Flats in Brixham. As a professional Fire and Safety Consultant, safety is one of my main priorities whenever I stay away from home. When you pay for accomodation you expect a degree of fire safety and obviously this varies in different countries. In the UK you can expect a relatively high degree of fire safety, but not here.
Devoncourt is a block of 24 self contained holiday flats, on 3 floors, and usually in this type of building you would expect to have a staircase that was protected by 30 minute fire doors - not here they have been removed. The layout of the corridors is such that "dead end" situations are created and here again you would expect the dead ends to be protected by fire doors that would allow you to escape to the protected fire stairs - but not here it is protected by non fire rated UPVC doors and glazing.
There are of course Portable Fire Extinguishers, but will they work - well there is no indication that they have been maintained, so who knows. Still we can use the Fire Hose Reel that the Fire Notice tells us about - I don't think so - someone has removed it.
To give us further reassurance the Fire Notice informs us that the Fire Brigade may not arrive.Perhaps this is because the building has no fire alarm and the Fire Brigade may not hear the shouts of "fire".
I did write to the owner and bring these items to his attention - but guess what - he did not reply.
