First, the upside. We had a superior room which was very spacious and very comfortable at the back of the hotel overlooking the village green/playing field. The huge bed was supremely comfortable and there was a large TV and coffee/tea/chocolate making facilities plus biscuits. The bathroom was also large with plenty of space either side of the handbasin for our toiletries. We stayed for three nights and our towels were changed every day.
The hotel is well located in an attractive village in the centre of Exmoor with two shops and a post office nearby. The hotel facilities and staff are great. The hotel provided us with plenty of information on local activities. On our first day we enjoyed a six mile walk around the River Exe Valley which was one of those recommended by the hotel and on the second day we took one of their suggested drives around Exmoor which was equally pleasurable but easier on the feet!
On the downside we felt that the food could have been a lot better - I enjoyed a very special homemade Chicken Kiev with fresh vegetables but otherwise none of our main courses met our expectations. Starters and puddings in general were fine. The self-service hot breakfast buffet in particular was, in our opinion, below standard - it appeared to have been put out for the 8 am start and when we arrived on our first morning at 9.am there was only a small amount of dried up bacon left and everything else was cool. The next day we avoided the buffet and ordered smoked haddock and poached egg but the fish was tasteless and dry. On our third morning we ordered poached egg on toast - perfect!
We would have loved to have come back to the Exmoor White Horse Inn for another holiday but, in out opinion, the food is not good enough. Such a shame.
