“Oasis of what service used to be”

Exmoor White Horse Inn

We have just returned from spending a wonderful 3 night break over the New Year with Peter and Linda(who was ill and unfortunately we did not see a lot of, but we are sure from when we did see her she was as charming and helpful as husband Peter) who provide a welcome through themselves and their staff from the lady on reception on our arrival and in the restaurant and bar throughout our stay .
The food we found to be exceptional with wonderfully presented starters, really tasty soups, nice variety of sorbets and cheeses, not to mention the main courses and varieties available and always a coffee and mint to finish. The weekend atmosphere was set by the efforts throughout the premises but really noticeable at the restaurant and little touches such as champagne and goodies in the rooms for New Year.
The place is alive with ideas of things to get out and do and there are very helpful walk guides at reception.
We will most certainly be returning to enjoy the lovely relaxed atmosphere at the next opportunity.

First, the upside. We had a superior room which was very spacious and very comfortable at the back of the hotel overlooking the village green/playing field. The huge bed was supremely comfortable and there was a large TV and coffee/tea/chocolate making facilities plus biscuits. The bathroom was also large with plenty of space either side of the handbasin for our toiletries. We stayed for three nights and our towels were changed every day.
The hotel is well located in an attractive village in the centre of Exmoor with two shops and a post office nearby. The hotel facilities and staff are great. The hotel provided us with plenty of information on local activities. On our first day we enjoyed a six mile walk around the River Exe Valley which was one of those recommended by the hotel and on the second day we took one of their suggested drives around Exmoor which was equally pleasurable but easier on the feet!
On the downside we felt that the food could have been a lot better - I enjoyed a very special homemade Chicken Kiev with fresh vegetables but otherwise none of our main courses met our expectations. Starters and puddings in general were fine. The self-service hot breakfast buffet in particular was, in our opinion, below standard - it appeared to have been put out for the 8 am start and when we arrived on our first morning at 9.am there was only a small amount of dried up bacon left and everything else was cool. The next day we avoided the buffet and ordered smoked haddock and poached egg but the fish was tasteless and dry. On our third morning we ordered poached egg on toast - perfect!
We would have loved to have come back to the Exmoor White Horse Inn for another holiday but, in out opinion, the food is not good enough. Such a shame.

We have just stayed at The Exmoor White Horse Inn our first visit to Exmoor. It was just simply perfect. The attention to detail and the level of service were excellent. Peter the manager was charming and nothing was too much trouble. How rare these days to find a place where the customer is made to feel truly welcome. We will return soon

We had been struggling to find a holiday abroad and in despair, having spent most of one Saturday trawling the Travel Agents, we purchased a national newspaper to see what was available and an offer sprang out at us for a 5 night stay at this hotel.

It's been a while since we visited this area and were a little 'anxious' as we travelled down wondering if we had been a little hasty with our booking. However, upon arrival we were not disappointed, although, for some reason we had anticipated the hotel actually being in more of a country house type setting rather than in the heart of the village.

Our welcome was very friendly and throughout our stay everyone in the hotel was so genuinely helpful and seemed to really enjoy working there.

Food was plentiful if a little lack lustre, but that was not a problem as there was a huge choice so one could vary each night. The waiting staff were lovely, even 'Basil Fawlty' - the funny young waiter who at first seemed to be rather abrupt and terse, but after a couple of meal-times, we got to see the funny side of him and his approach added to the qaintness of mealtimes - "Are you ready". "Are you finished"?

Our room was warm and clean and the bed very comfy. The lovely fluffy towels and very nice bathroom were most welcome after days exploring the wonderful countryside and coast hereabouts. The view from the front window watching the comings and goings in the village was actually quite nice though at first we thought it might be noisy.

Would I return - most definitely. Thank you to the Management and staff - it was a lovely break.

We stayed at The White Horse, Exford in September 2007 for the second time in 18 months as part of a vintage car group. The hotel is full of old world charm, although there are rather a lot of stairs. Food is excellent. The staff are curteous, helpful and friendly. Whilst we were there my husband was ill, they found a doctor for him and took his meals up to our room. Nothing was too much trouble, the chef discussed with me a menu for him with food to tempt his poorly appetite.
