We decided we'd like to escape to see in the New Year and went to the White Horse Inn with friends, on a 3-day break, as we'd had an enjoyable weekend there a couple of years ago. We were not disappointed. We were made to feel very welcome in this cosy hotel. Although the rooms are not particularly large they have everything you could need - plenty of storage space, comfortable bed (with quilt and soft linen), excellent bathroom (with fluffy towels) and, girls, plugs in sensible places where you can actually plug your hairdryer in and see in a mirror at the same time! On this particular weekend we also had a bottle of Moet & Chandon, sweeties, toiletries and a lovely calendar containing photos, taken by the owner, of Exmoor waiting for us. The lovely leaded windows in the room looked out on to the village and river.
The food was delicious on all three evenings and the gala New Year dinner started with hot punch and smoked salmon canapes in the bar. After the very traditional dinner (pheasant, venison, wild boar and haggis amongst the choices) we moved into the bar which was heaving with residents and locals. It was delightful and very friendly. I love the bar there as it is well used by local people and their dogs and has what looks like a very good menu although we didn't get to sample it as, believe me, breakfast and dinner were enough.
New Year's Day saw the local Hunt gathering and leaving from Exford. Even if you don't approve of this it is certainly something to see and totally normal to everyone in this part of the country. Although the weather was particularly appalling on this visit (remember the gales) there are lots of excellent walks and Lynton and Lynmouth are nearby - always good for a visit.
We met people there who book for the next year as they leave. A most enjoyable way to wind down after a busy Christmas.

We stayed in this hotel for a weekend break and would definately go there again. When I booked the room, I was told we would be staying in the lodge which is seperate to the actual hotel, so I was worried it may not be as nice. However it didn't disappoint. The room was lovely with views right over the river. The hotel restaurant is an absolute must also. I don't think I have ever eaten so much delicious food, and at £20 for 3 courses, it is very good value. I will definately be coming back here again.
