“A slice of heaven”

The hotel is tranquility itself - just what my husband and I needed in order to unwind. It is set in an idyllic garden within an area of stunning natural beauty. The food is fabulous - take elasticated waistbands as there is a plentiful supply - and is mostly locally produced, organic and free range. The accommodation is comfortable and stylish, with a hint of the Jane Austin era about it. The hosts are geniality themselves and you could not wish for more pleasant company, although they are not in the least intrusive - we left feeling as if we had been to stay with good friends for the weekend. This is the most chiled out I have felt for a very long time and I cannot recommend this little slice of heaven enough. We will definitely go back - time and time again I hope!

“Away from it all”

The Old Rectory Hotel

21 Mar 2008

My husband and I had driven several hours from mid Wales on a horribly wet day with the rain teeming down and visability much reduced. However, our spirits rose when, on nearing Martinhoe through stunningly beautiful country, we discovered the hotel nestled by the side of the ancient parish church and were immediately struck by its ambience. This was reinforced further by a very warm welcome from Sam, co-owner of the hotel with Huw, who took us to our room prior to our meeting up with our fellow guests for a pre-dinner drink in the pleasant drawing room. The small size of the hotel enabled us to enjoy excellent service and attention with meals being quite superb, both in originality and quality. I certainly recommend the breakfasts! Great attention was paid to detail and everything was immaculately clean and fresh, which helped to make this such an enjoyable stay. Our two days went by all too quickly and we left with a vow to return in the autumn.

All in all a most enjoyable experience which we highly recommend. This is an area of quite oustanding beauty missed(mercifully) by the masses venturing further west. Unspolit gems like these will hopefully remain for many years to come.

“Super Hotel”

We stayed at the old Rectory for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Every aspect of the hotel was excellent. The hotel is located is in a very small quiet village close to the cliffs and sea which is ideal for a relaxing break and lots of walking.

Our room and all parts of the hotel were spotlessly clean and all newly decorated. The sitting room, conservatory with 200 year old grape vine and dining room were all very comfortable and filled with beautiful furnishings and they had a great garden with a stream. A lovely touch was the delicious bunch of grapes in our room that had been picked from their own vine. The food was wonderful with a four course meal each evening, the quality was exceptionally good and all dishes were home made.

Every attention to detail and care had been taken to make all aspects of our stay as enjoyable as possible and I will definitely be returning to this hotel again.

On approaching the hotel from the country lane, you enter from the rear of the property with a a row of two cottages on the left, the front door is at the back of the house with extensive views to the garden. On entering the hall which is tastefully decorated and with a large oak console table you come to reception, this might only be a 2 star hotel but you have the feeling of quality. We had an ideal this was going to be an enjoyable stay as we had visited the owers previous hotel in South Devon several times in the past. But the Old Rectory is something totally different, the ideal place to get away from it all, if only for a few days. We stayed the August bank holiday and was bathed in beautiful sunshine. There are many gardens including a natural stream with plenty of wildlife. The hotel rooms are of good size and very clean and nicely furnished, the food is first class with five courses, and the grapes which grow in the conservatory don't only look good they taste great ! Yes we will be staying at this charming hotel again, not cheap but well worth the money. Thank You, Stewart and Chris.

“Best kept secret in Exmoor”

The Old Rectory Hotel

I am a little reluctant to write a review as now the secret will be out and everyone will want to stay here!

Fantastic, peaceful retreat a real get away from it all. We both felt at home and with the added hospitality from extreemly attentive hosts we could not ask for more. The food was exceptional, the wine list large and interesting.

The rooms were comfortable, clean and were kitted out with all the modern facilities you would expect.

We will be returning in the Autumn and I would recommend this hotel without hesitation.
