Having been the first to post a Tripadvisor review about The Swan Inn, I am disappointed to have to update it.
My Family and I looked forward to returning to The Swan Inn on our Easter visit to Devon. We arrived on a sunny Sunday lunch time and the inn was very busy, we were lucky to get one of the outdoor tables on the non-smoking side (however a guy was happily smoking on this side and was not asked to move by any of the staff).
Roast beef seemed to be the popular dish of the day, it was beautifully rare. My wife, who will only eat rare beef was tempted so before ordering I asked could it be guaranteed rare beef or was it pot luck, if so my wife would choose something else, I was assured it was all rare (they cook it further for those who want it well done).
When our meals arrived it was immediately obvious the beef was not rare, when the waitress arrived with the side dishes I explained my conversation on ordering and she said she would be back to us. The waitress returned and said the chef says all the beef is rare, we pointed to our plates at our grey meat to argue otherwise and the waitress said she would be back. A second waitress arrived with some grey beef with a few mild pink lines in it to say it was all rare and the gravy was disguising it and showed us the so called rare beef in her hand. We pointed out this was not rare however she insisted it was and said what more can I do. I said my wife would choose something else, by this stage I was getting a little annoyed at having to have a debate about the food with two different people. My wife reselected scallops. A couple of minutes later a third member of staff arrived at the table to say I believe there is a problem with the beef. I responded with yes and we have already had to deal with two members of staff, her response was well you have now reached the top, I am the owner. So yes, the rare debate drudged embarrassingly on and from what we could gather, the owners main reason for arriving at the table was to ensure we would pay the difference between the two dishes.
We ate our food, which I would have to say was excellent and I then proceeded to have a chat with the owner. I explained having to argue with various people about one dish is not acceptable, I was told her staff did not know how to deal with it, I would have thought it is up to the management to ensure the staff were up to speed!
This review is purely based on bad service, the food is still extremely good. Had the beef been exchanged straight away we would have been back several times during our holiday!!!
